| "Good Atmosphere, Over-priced Pizza" |
|
|
by Lauren (from Sydney, NSW) September 2008 - The Australian is a really fun and usually-busy pub in The Rocks, one of Sydney's oldest neighbourhoods. It's a great place to head on the weekend or after work for a pint with friends or co-workers.
Unlike most of the city's other pubs and bars, they serve pints! Most other establishments serve schooners (glasses with about 2/3 the amount of a regular pint), possibly because in the summer it gets so hot that by the time you get to the end of a pint, it's warm. The pub offers a large range of brews, beyond the typical choices of Toohey's or VB.
The menu include a range of items but they boast about the specialty pizzas. They offer a few vegetarian options, which is much-appreciated, and also serve up some interesting stuff like pizza with kangaroo, emu and crocodile (not all on the same pizza). I've tried a couple of the veggie ones, most recently the Aussie Four Cheese with parm, mozza, cheddar and blue.
Their pizzas are all very good but I find them over-priced for what you get. There are other pizza places in Sydney where the pizza is just as good, if not better, and are similarly priced but you get a more reasonable serving size. The last time I went to the Australian with co-workers one of them asked (twice), "is this the large pizza?!" Despite its average size, it was indeed the large.
Other than that, it's really a great Sydney pub with some history and atmosphere, as well as an interesting clientele.

| "Fantastic Pizza!!" |

by Tanya (from Calgary) March 2008 - The best thing about this pub is their pizzas. They have a great variety of different toppings for their pizzas and they are all reasonably priced. I have tried a few of the different vegetarian pizzas and I have not found one I didn’t like. I especially like the 4 cheese pizza which is, as you would expect, super cheesy. The tandori chicken pizza is also fantastic as it is served with lemon and mint yogurt which gives it the traditional tandori chicken taste. A small sized pizza is the perfect sized meal for one person. They also have the usual selection of beers on tap. Although the inside is pretty small and a little cramped feeling, the best place to sit is outside at one of their sidewalk tables. It’s on a narrow side street that doesn’t have too much traffic so you don’t feel like you are breathing in exhaust fumes. There is limited seating outside and it gets busy with the after work crowd so get there for an early afternoon pizza and beer if you can.
