"A Scandinavian Delight"

by Mary (from Camrose)
January 2008 - The Lefse House, as one might notice from its name, specializes in Scandinavian food. Not only are they open for noon lunches and all day coffee, they supply other centres with Scandinavian treats and cater to local functions. This small family owned business is appreciated by the whole community. Noon lunches here are very popular, and a variety of combination plates are served. I had the Swedish Meat Balls, with mashed potatoes, lefse, and sweet soup as additions to the meal. A choice of desserts also is also included in the very reasonable price. I chose a sandbukkel (a pastry tart with lemon filling). The meal was very tasty, but I was disappointed in the mashed potatoes. This is the only time that I have been here for lunch that I could say that it wasn't top quality. The lefse wraps, and smoked salmon plates are also favorites. One can not come here for a meal without having a good look at all the items for sale, ranging from imported goods, souveniers, and delicious take home foods.

"Scandinavian Flavour "

by Kaye (from Camrose, Alberta, Canada)
December 2007 - Lutefisk, lefse, takk skal du ha.
The old hockey game cheer is new again. The Lefse House in Camrose has a fine reputation as an eating establishment that can boast the cheers of their customers and boast of lutefisk and lefse as well. A country kitchen atmosphere with wooden tables and a mix of old kitchen chairs gives a homey feel to this small restaurant that seats about 25 patrons.

Restaurant hours are from morning coffee to 5:pm. There are fresh cinnamon buns adorned with cream cheese icing every Friday. Being there in the morning is a good idea as the customers flock in to take these huge fresh buns to many businesses in town.

Scandinavian coffee is generously served with seconds. Tea and cold drinks are available as well. Goodies abound. Sandbakkels, gingersnaps, cardomom cookies, rosettes are some of the specialties. These can be purchased as takeout or eaten in the restaurant/bakery. The bustle of staff rolling lefse can be seen. The prices in the restaurant are very reasonable. The bakery items which are specialties are a bit dear but you cannot buy these delicacies in other shops so desire for that unique taste makes them affordable. Memory of kitchens in your past makes them irresistible.

The lunch menu is varied. Probably this is the only place to order a plate of potato dumplings [pult or klubb or komle] in Alberta. Or maybe lutefisk is more to your fancy. A large-size chicken wrap with sour cream and salsa is a real favorite for me. The smoked salmon plate is hard to resist. Homemade soup is also an option. With the meal, which is under $10. , the patron receives a choice of desserts. The lemon filled sandbakkels with whipped cream are amazing. You don't have to be Scandinavian to enjoy the hearty meals.

You will likely see shoppers who are having a little imaginary tour as they browse the authentic Scandinavian merchandise with an eye to taking an extra treat home.
Visiting the Lefse House for a meal while savoring the ethnic aura provides a memorable experience when you visit Camrose.
