"A Disappointment "
5.83
by Gary (from Calgary)
June 2008 - When I pulled up outside the Honey Pot, I thought the place looked very promising. It appeared cute, trendy and the terracotta exterior colours were reminiscent of Mexico. Upon entering, I was still pleased. The dark wood and somewhat subdued lighting gave the place a cozy, almost classy ambiance. I looked over the menu and was surprised to see that pasta dishes cost $16.00. It seemed a bit pricey but some of the other dishes seemed more reasonably priced. For example, Wild Salmon was only $18.00 and Lemon Pepper Cod was $17.00. Wraps were $10.00 and there were lots of choices for appetizers. (Tiger Shrimp, Escarot, Mozza Sticks, Nachos and a Mediterranean Plate. I decided to have the Caribbean Chicken for $17.00. It sounded delicious. It was described as oven-baked chicken breast stuffed with crab and cream cheese and finished with diced apples in a mild curry sauce. In bold words above the description it explained that one must wait at least half an hour as each entre was oven-baked, but it would be well worth the wait! I didn't mind waiting and I settled back to enjoy my beer. I was surprised when my meal appeared in about 15 minutes time, and I wondered if it had been cooked earlier and then simply warmed up. There was just the right amount of curry and it was tender enough to cut with a fork. The rice, however, was a disappoint to say the least, and I must say I have never tasted anything like it before. It was spongy. Yes, spongy. You could actually feel it compress and bounce back as you chewed it. I asked the server about it and she in turn went into the kitchen to ask the cook. She explained that it had been sitting in a pot with water since about 4:30. It was almost 8:00 when I had my meal. Obviously this did not impress me and it certainly did not match the tantalizing description in the menu. Compared to the rice, the cob of corn was okay. Its flavour, though, was totally overpowered by the chicken curry and so it seemed almost tasteless. The server was attentive with a good sense of humour and the beer was excellent. The house red was Donini, and the white was L'Ambiance. ($6.00) There was a $10.00 corkage fee if you brought your own bottle. I would not eat at the Honey Pot again unless I had no other choice and I was ravenous. I would reserve this place for drinking beer and watching sports on the television.
