March 2009 - As a surprise for my husband, I planned a weekend getaway to Banff and thought that a fun activity like dog sledding would be a great thing to do while in the area. I booked with Kingmik using Discover Banff Tours' online booking service and found the whole booking experience to be very easy.
Although Kingmik will provide transportation from Banff for certain departure times, we chose to drive ourselves to the tour. It was very easy to find, as it is located on the road up to Chateau Lake Louise.
When we arrived there were tons of dogs just amped to go. They were mixed breed dogs that apparently have Alaskan husky and Greyhound in them, and I suspect some shepherd too. When we were introduced to our guide, he let us meet all the dogs in our team and pet them. They sure eat well too, while we were there they devoured a massive amount of raw chicken and fish, as well as drank a ton of raw chicken mixed with water!! I guess they have to eat a lot of calories to run all the time!
The dog sledding itself was amazing. We were very, very cozy in our sled wrapped in a sleeping bag. Our guide was very informative and coincidentally he was from the same small town that my husband is from in New Brunswick! What a small world!
The scenery was fabulous, the dogs were amazing and I can definitely say it was the highlight of our weekend. We went across the Great Divide and our guide took a ton of pictures of us and the dogs with our camera. You can really tell the dogs LOVE their job!
I would definitely recommend this tour company to anyone that wants to do something a little bit different and a ton of fun while in the Rockies. I want to go again! In the mean time I think I might just train my two pups to pull a sled!
