"A Refreshing change from the norm"

March 2008 - Having eaten at just about every type of restaurant in town I took a friends recommendation and tried the small Tapas bar known as Twist. I was greeted by a smiling waitress and shown to a table free from the clutter of commercial advertisement literature. The quiet ambiance of the bar restaurant was a welcome break from the normal formula of loud décor and even louder sports channels from a multitude of TVs. The menu looks little strange but was carefully explained buy the friendly, polite waitress. I opted for the excellent sweet potato fingers covered in a terrific crisp coating, this dish alone threatened to fill me up. I then opted for a plate of excellent prawns, followed by a truly excellent chicken curry which was a real display of what can be achieved by the ‘home cooked from fresh ingredients’ approach to good food. This is no fast food joint and each dish should be savoured. Much effort appears to have gone into producing quality dishes with a difference. The choice of wine was excellent and was knowledgably recommended by the waitress. Small complimentary nibbles were provided in between dishes and at all times I was looked after and made to feel as a valued customer. A small word of caution should be noted, whilst you do not receive the traditional huge plate full of fries and onion rings as a meal, the carefully chosen plates of more modest tasty morsels can still leave you feeling full, only this time you will know not from fries etc. I also noticed that those around me seemed to come from a range of age groups and were engaged in conversation whilst dipping into various dishes, Twist really seems to encapsulate that atmosphere which makes you want to relax and take your time to enjoy both the great food and the company of those around you. I can only recommend this bar wholeheartedly to any one looking for somewhere a bit different from the norm. Great food, great value, friendly service, and sophisticated atmosphere.

"What a treat"

March 2008 - A friend reccomended me to this restaurant, so my husband and I went in for a romantic dinner. When we arrived, there was a very eye catching specials board that was located just at the entrance to the patio. We had a quick look and proceded inside. We were greeted by who would be our waitress for the evening, she was smartly dressed and very pleasantly informed us that we could chose a table wherever we liked. We grabbed a spot by the window and started looking at the menu that was already on the table. Our waitress brought us a wine list and another menu. Once we were informed of the specials we knew we had to have them. A Spicy shrimp and mango salad, Salmon and crab cakes and Almond stuffed dates wrapped in bacon. I also wanted to try the Chorizo sausage, the Beef cutlet and the Cheese plate. We were brought some olives that had been marinated in house and before we knew it food started coming out. One or two plates at a time, we enjoyed the wonderful flavors that the Chef had combined in her origional recipies. Throughout the whole meal the waitress was very attentive, ensuring that each plate was as satisfying as the next. All in all we spent about a hundred dollars (including a healthy tip for the very knowledgable waitress) and we were stuffed. Everything was so delicious and the service was high class. Nothing like any other restaurant in Medicine Hat. Everything is made from scratch and it definitly shows.I would reccomend this restaurant to anyone who enjoys great food and exceptional service. Before we left we were sure to reserve a table for next weeks Jazz night with one of our favorite local Jazz artists, Lyle Rebbeck.

"Outstanding Restaurant Idea!"

March 2008 - Finally something different in the Hat!

Tapas and Wine - what a great idea! Live music too - wow!

Had a fantastic evening with great tasting Tapas and fine wines to choose from. Once you get used to the idea of Tapas it's really addictive. An unusual and refreshing idea! Twist was recommended to us as by our good friends and we were not disappointed!

May not please everyone, especially if you want large helpings and lots of it! I dont think it's about that. The atmosphere was great and the staff were well informed on the variety of wines available. The staff recommendations were surprisingly accurate. It's a real dining experience!

We thoroughly enjoyed our evening as it was relaxed yet classy. We are already looking forward to our next visit!

"Disapointing dining experience "

by Jim (from Medicine Hat)
February 2008 - I have just walked in the door at home having been out for dinner at Twist and I felt I had to write a review immediately.
My meal consisted of the following: 2 Olives with a small piece of bread, a very small portion of salad leaves with 2 small slices of orange, half a strawberry and a slice of kiwi fruit, a date wrapped in a piece of bacon, a tablespoon of curried chicken with a dollop of mango chutney and small piece of pita bread, 2 lamb meatballs with 2 small pieces of roast potato and to finish we had a small slice of chocolate torte (half the size of a playing card and about 5mm thick) with a small dollop of ice cream. All this for the princely sum of $28 dollars not including drinks or tip. ($60 all in) I felt robbed.
Now to be fair to the restaurant we were a group of 13 (unlucky for some?!) and had ordered the set price menu outlined above. The food we did receive was very good however there wasn't enough of it. I realise that this is a tapas bar but still the portions were measly - one of our friends had been there before and they had had the same amount of food for 2 that we had for 5!

My review title sums it all up, I've been into worse restaurants in Medicine Hat but in doing so you know what to expect, so when things don't turn out great you can accept it. Twist promises so much yet cannot deliver and to make things worse, not only did we feel robbed at the amount we had paid, but we were all still hungry! Thank god for the Tim Hortons stop for a sandwich on the way home!
To sum it up the restaurant has much to appeal to everyone, decor, reasonable drinks prices and good food, it's just a shame that you have to pay so much for so little. Save your money and go up the road to DeVines.
