| "The most happening place in town" |
|
|
by Tanya (from Calgary) July 2007 - I recently stayed with a group of friends at the Black Diamond Hotel. We were in town to celebrate a friends birthday and as this hotel is in the centre of town, we decided to stay here. The hotel was built in the 1920's but has been recently renovated. The rooms are reasonably priced, spacious and have small kitchens in them. There is laundry in the hallway making it a good place to stay for an extended period of time. There was no air conditioning so it was tough to sleep in the summer heat. We had the window open but as it is on the main route through town, the heavy trucks on the road kept us awake. The best thing about the Black Diamond Hotel is the bar located on the main floor. It is a large bar and has live music a number of days a week in the summer. Saturday nights is karaoke night which we were lucky enough to experience. There are pool tables and some video games as well making it a hub of social activity for both visitors and locals.

| "Smelly but still OK" |

by Lauren (from Calgary) July 2007 - I've driven past the Black Diamond Hotel on a number of occasions but never had the nerve to go in. Things changed in July when a friend decided to do something a bit different for her 30th birthday and head out of town to party at the hotel. We ended up booking one of the rooms so that everyone could enjoy themseleves without worrying about driving all the way home.
I think that overall we were all pleasantly surprised by the state of the rooms. I guess we expected them to be dingy but they were actually quite nice. Not the Four Seasons by any means, but still they were clean, quite large and had refrigerators and decent TVs. The bathrooms were a bit dated but were fine for a single night stay. I think that our main complaints where that the room was incredibly hot and there was no A/C, just a small fan, which didn't help much. As a result, we left the window open. Since we faced Main Street, we had a loud night. Every time a big truck drove by it sounded like a tornado was about to rip us out of our beds! The only other complaint that was despite being in a non-smoking room, the place smelled very strongly of stale ciggy smoke. I imagine that it had been a smoking room for a long, long, long time before being converted.
It wasn't perfect but the hotel was definitely decent for the price (around $80) and was fine as a place to crash after a night of having fun downstairs.
