| "Take the time to go back in time" |

by Maureen (from Calgary, Alberta) July 2007 - After taking the dog out to Kananaskis Country for a day trip, my friend and I planned to pop into Black Diamond, grab some take out and make our way home. This was before we stepped into Merv's Diner and decided this was somewhere we had to eat-in. As I tied up my dog outside whole generations poured out of the diner, rainbow colored ice cream dripping from the faces and cones of grandpas, moms and tots. It seemed as though we really were transported back to the 50's.
The flashy decor, doo-wop tunes and waitresses dressed in poodle skirts all added to the retro feel but it was Merv, the handlebar moustached owner who was manning the grill while chatting with patrons, who really caught my attention. The diner was extremely busy as it was just around lunch time but for the staff it was obviously "just another day" as our waitress took our orders promptly and then encouraged us to look around at the antiques and candy shoppe in the restaurant. I thought-what a brilliant way to keep your guests happy should the wait be a little longer than expected!
The restroom was very clean and brought out a giggle as I looked into the mirror to see border greeting of HELLO GORGEOUS. We split an order of large fries which were fresh, hot and enough for to feed a family of four for $5.35. We decided to stick to the retro theme and order two bottles of coca-cola classic which were as ice cold as they could be. I was close to ordering the Elvis Burger (with peanut butter and bananas) out of pure curiousity but wasn't that brave this time around. My friend had the James Dean burger, which was homemade right at the bar, had a great blend of spices and seasoning and was a great deal for only $4.75. I decided on Marv's classic Chicago style hot dog for $4.95. Now, I should mention this was no hot dog to impress a fella on a date with--it was overflowing with pickles, tomatoes, relish, mustard, ketchup and hot peppers--I used more than two napkins and was a mess by the time I finished but I must say now that if that's a Chicago style hot dog then they can boast about more than just their pizza.
I really wanted a float or fountain soda as Merv's is famous for them, but by this time I was stuffed and my dog was giving me puppy dog eyes from the steps outside so I said goodbye and thank you to Merv and the girls and decided that next weekend I would once again take the time to go back in time.

by Wilder (from Calgary) September 2006 - This place is truly a hiddin treasure. It was a very intesting experience for my wife and kids, as well as myself. There is plenty to do while you are waiting for your food, wether it be looking at the neat old antiques for sale, or watching the old fasion multi instment piano. I will FOR SURE be going back!
