September 2007 - I’m usually looking for the cheapest accommodation in town, in Calgary this was a bit of a challenge. There really is not too much choice at the cheaper end of the scale, in fact it was almost impossible to find a double room for under $100. But the Hostelling International City Centre hostel is a little gem if you want to be within walking distance of the downtown.
The room was small, it just fit a double and single bed in it, but it had a TV and DVD player as well as an en suite toilet and shower. Internet access was available in our room (the lower priced motels in motel village either didn’t have access or could only provide it in their lobby). They provided parking for us too, a slightly weird system where you put a notice in your car, but free and close to downtown so a bonus.
The hostel staff were very friendly and there was tons of information about Calgary in the lounge/lobby area, a communal kitchen and lounge area completed the facilities I used. The only real negative was the run down sketchy location. Possibly not a place to take kids as there were trash cans for used needles on the lamp posts nearby.
