| "Great Birthday Location" |
|
|
by Rhonda (from Calgary) February 2010 - Went to Mother Tucker’s located on 10th Avenue S.W. in Calgary to help celebrate a birthday. Mother Tucker’s offers a free birthday lunch when accompanied by someone else, but please note that it must be the actual date of your birthday. You can either order from a menu or choose the buffet which in my opinion is always the way to go. The buffet has a large salad bar area which also has a made to order pasta station and a carve section which had roast beef or ham. The other section has a choice of two soups along with many other choices, some of my favourites were lasagna, beef mexi-wraps, mashed potatoes with gravy and the ham. They also have a selection of desserts but my favourite were the puddings (choice of chocolate or butterscotch). The décor is very rustic and has an old barn feel to it. We were seated by a fireplace and it was very cozy. Great place to go with a group of people as there was lots of choice and at lunch time is only about $12 per person.

by tanya (from calgary) November 2009 - This used to be a fun place to go with good food and prices... but now it is in such need for a renovation - it's just not worth it... actually its kind of dirty. MT's... you have a great location and concept - time to bring it back to its glory days.

| "A little Dated" |
|
|
by Nicole (from Calgary) July 2009 - I went to Mother Tuckers for a birthday lunch celebration, as they offers a free buffet for the birthday guest. Their lunch buffet is quite elaborate, with a large salad bar, a carving station with roast beef and ham, a couple of soups and everyday favorites like mashed potatoes, chicken wings and lasagna. They also have a make your own pasta station, where one of their chefs will make you a pasta to order with your choice of ingredients. I enjoyed this part of my meal the most as it seemed to be the only item I got that was actually hot. Everything else was luke warm and tasted like it had been made hours ahead of time. Their desert section is just okay. A few squares and pudding, but nothing to write home about. The decor is dark and somewhat dated, although it looks like it would have been something special in it's day. Overall my meal was still enjoyable and I feel I got my money's worth, though Mother Tuckers and their menu could definitely use a bit of a makeover.

by Jason (from Calgary) June 2009 - This restaurant has been around for a long time, a fixture in Calgary. I used to always hear great reviews about how great this place is, but that was a long time ago. Nowadays, referrals to this restaurant is usually prefaced with “It used to be a great place BUT….” I’ve been there several times for lunch hoping that it would get better but I don’t think it will. For $12.95 you get unlimited access to a soup and salad bar, various buffet items and a carving station. None of which is worth writing home about. The prime rib is usually rough and dry. I just cant really find one item that was worth writing about. Standard items include lasagna, chicken wings, teriyaki chicken and mashed potatoes. The service is not bad as my drink cup was always refilled before it got empty. They do offer a free meal on your birthday, so that might be a good time to try this place out…however unless you hate yourself, its probably a better idea to pay for a good meal somewhere else.

| "Mother Tuckers Calgary" |

by Jane (from Calgary, AB) March 2009 - The salad bar, ribs and steaks were ok but soup was super salty! I had a sip and was ready to throw it away. My family was there to have a farewell dinner to my sister who is going away, but she ended up cancelling and leaving the dinner when my dad saw something crawling on the floor. It was a mouse!!! My sister got so freaked out she screamed. We told the waitress about mice running around in the dinning room but she seem to have no concern about it. The rest of my family except my sister stayed for the remaing part of our supper but the whole ambience was broken. Seeing these little creatures running around the room lead me thinking about the cleanliness of the food. But one thing for sure, me and my family will never go to Mother Tuckers again in our lifetime. I might even spread the word to my friends as it was such an unpleasant experience.

| "Time Warp" |

by Keith (from Calgary) December 2008 - If memory serves me correctly, there was a time when restaurants were dark dank caverns that prided themselves on creating a quiet setting for loved ones to enjoy a large meal made up of the finest red-meats in the world.
Based on my last trip to Mother Tuckers, they have not gotten the memo that this trend died in the late eighties.
I went to this restaurant with some colleagues to try their lunch time buffet. The first thing that struck me was how old-fashioned the layout of the restaurant is. The restaurant seems so old, when I try to picture it in my head, it looks like a sepia photo.
The food on hand for the buffet is also a throw back. Mashed potatoes, roasted ham, and baked chicken wings were the norm. None of which were particularly good. I guess when you consider how much the buffet costs, it's an okay deal, but even though I was full when I left, I just wasn't satisfied.

by Simpson (from Airdrie) November 2008 - Mother Tuckers use to be high on my list of serving great Prime Rib. However, it has taken a downward slide over the Years. The Salad Bar has always been exceptional and I think is what keeps it going. The food seemed packaged and sub par. Spongey chicken breasts. Grissley prime rib and baby back ribs that would not fall off the bone. Far over priced for the food sans the lack of customers on a Friday night. Would not recommend it to others unless for salad only.

by Danielle (from Calgary, Alberta) December 2007 - Took my boyfriend here for his free birthday dinner. Six other tables; six birthdays. We both had prime rib & salad bar. The meat was sub-par; grissley & the rarest cut was medium. The other fixins were basic home cooking: white rice, corn, soggy scalloped potatoes and overcooked broccoli stir-fry, unimpressive. The salad bar was wonderful, great variety of salads & cheeses, well maintained and fresh. It was moderately enjoyable at half-price with the birthday discount. It would have been poor value at full price. I would go back for the salad bar only.

| "A good lunching spot" |
|
|
by Martha (from Calgary) March 2006 - I have only ever been here for lunch, but I was quite impressed when I went. They have a massive buffet that takes up two rooms and has everything - cheeses, salads, soups, appetizer-type munchies, plus various meats, breads and desserts - all for about $11 ot $12. Plus, if it's your birthday, you eat for free!
