"Grand Seafood Dining"

March 2010 - In a sturdy former bank building downtown is a great find – Catch Restaurant and Oyster Bar. Two separate floors hold the casual oyster bar downstairs and the more urbane dining room upstairs. We opted for the upstairs and were not disappointed, other than a slight wait for our wine. For this, the waiter apologized and upgraded our wine. Catch has a fine selection of wines. We considered having the six course dinner with wine pairing, but our appetites told us to try it another time. Our appetizers were delicious and artfully presented. We tried the Chika Teriyaki Cod and Tempura Prawn (yum) and the Dungeness Crab Cake made with a saffron vanilla sauce and lime caviar. Our main courses were tasty – a Yellow fin Tuna wrapped in bacon and watercress with savory walnut and apple ravioli style pasta, and Black Angus AAA Tenderloin topped with mushrooms & bacon madiera sauce, and Lobster. For dessert we tried the house made berry sorbet and a glass of ice wine. The flavors, fresh seafood and ambiance are worth the prices.

"Great! But not Exceptional. "

August 2009 - I went to Catch with my girlfriend for her birthday in the upstairs dining room. We ordered two appetizers: The lobster roll (fantastic!) and the crab cake (just good). The green puree the lobster roll came on was delicious! I would definitely order this appetizer again. For the main dishes she had the halibut and I had the tuna. She loved her dish and I tasted it and it was really good. The tuna dish I had was nothing special by any means and lacked flavor. For dessert we had the creme brulee, which had a hint of orange that I knew I wasn't going to be thrilled about but it was still good. The dessert options weren't anything to get excited over at all.

The menu in general didn't wow me when reading it. Too many times there was just one ingredient that I didn't like in many dishes. The chef's tasting menu was very interesting and if I were to go back, I would definitely give this a try!

The ambiance was OK. The service was good although a little slow to start in taking our orders. The wine we ordered was different than the one that came to the table, but I decided not to care. I wish I had cared and got what I asked for.

Overall this restaurant was really good with minor complaints. I look forward to a change in menu though as the seasons change before I give it another try.

"Food was just OK"

February 2006 - Oh where to begin, my husband and I were hosting 3 other couples for a business dinner, Before all our guest had even been seated the hostess informed us that we would have to be finished in 1.5 hours, she told me this as my husband was taking a call outside on his cell phone. Everyone that heard her say this were shocked and we were not told this when we booked. Throughout the night we were joking about how much time we had left. When taking our order the waitress rolled her eyes a few times about questions in regard to the menu. I can't even remember all the negative things but we were not rushed out since we were spending upwards of $1200.00. Everyone at our table commented how they would never return and I was so steamed at the time that I was going to write a letter which I never did. On top of it all a 20% tip was automatically added which is our usual tip amount but wouldn't have been that night!! food was just o.k

"Perfect Anniversary Spot"

December 2005 - My wife and I went to Catch (upstairs dining room) for our wedding anniversary. The service and food were both tremendous. Our bill, including an appetizer, 0.5 litre carafe of white wine, entrees and coffee came to approximately $125. This is a little on the high side, but it was well worth it.

"That Happy Good Food Glow"

September 2005 - My wife and I visited the catch to celebrate our anniversary. We've wanted to visit for a while and we are really glad that we finally got the chance. Reservations are a must as this is a busy restaurant. Instead of booking in the dining room we ate in the main flour bar/lounge. The hostess warned us that it would be slightly more noisy. While there was some noise I think it added to the atmosphere. My wife didn't want to get too full so we shared a crab cake as an appetizer. It was phenomenal and was a perfect lead in to our dinner. We ordered the seafood sampler platter tower for two (I doubt that was what it was called but you get the idea). The platter had oysters, shrimp, half a crab and more, all served on a two-tier plate filled with crushed ice. I don't know if I've ever had seafood as good as this. With my meal I enjoyed a glass of shiraz, which seemed a little over-priced but in a place as popular as this they usually do. It was very good. We had coffee and dessert (fancy, chocolaty and fantastic) and they were a perfect finish to a spectacular meal. If you love fresh, perfectly prepared seafood, this is where you need to go. Just remember to bring your wallet as it was expensive. This restaurant deserves its reputation as one of the best restaurants in Calgary.
