"An Overall Pretty Good Experience"

by Denny (from Calgary, AB)
January 2009 - We were pretty much driving aimlessly down Barlow Trail looking for somewhere to eat when we came across the northeast location of the Cactus Club. We had never been to this location before, so thought we'd try it out. It was a Tuesday night around 7:30pm, so you wouldn't think it would be too busy, but this place was packed. We didn't want to wait for a table, so we chose to sit in the bar area. The only table available was this two-seater right at the entrance to the kitchen. In retrospect I would have waited for a different table because it almost felt like I was part of the kitchen, as I could hear what the cooks and servers were saying and I could hear all the pans banging etc.

The server was very friendly and she was pretty efficient. I chose to get a burger with mushrooms and bacon with fries. It was good. My wife had the teryaki rice bowl, which she said was just ok. The sauce was supposed to be yogurt-based, but it seemed more like a mayo-based dip as it was quite heavy. Other than the poorly-located table, the overall experience was pretty good.

"A Hidden Gem!"

November 2008 - I had never been to a Cactus Club Cafe and had actually never heard anything about it, but on a recent night out with my girlfriend we were looking for somewhere to eat near Chinook Centre - we wanted to catch a movie afterward. We spotted this restaurant and decided to check it out.

We were greeted by at least 3 hostesses and were then shown to a table near the front of the restaurant. The ambiance is actually a lot more upscale than I had pictured from the outside of the building. The lighting is a bit on the intimate side and it has a contemporary feel.

The place was packed when we got there - around 5:30 on a Friday. The menu featured a wide range of items like burgers, sandwiches, salads and appetizers. They had some specials and I chose to get the Jack Daniels ribs with mashed potatoes and asparagus. We started with some hot wings, which were very good and my girlfriend ordered a meal-sized salad that had spinach, breaded chicken, heirloom tomatoes etc. in it. My ribs were absolutely fantastic and the portion was huge! The salad was definitely meal-sized, it had a huge piece of chicken in it! I had the liberty of trying both entrees and can't complain about one thing.

The service was sensational. Everytime we needed something the server was right there. We ordered the house beer, which was called something like Udder Ale, and found it to be very tasty. For dessert we split the cheesecake and even that was delicious.

Throughout the entire experience the staff was always clearing dishes, replenishing drinks and being very attentive. We enjoyed ourselves so much that we actually missed the movie! We'll definitely eat at the Cactus Club Cafe again.

"Good food and service"

September 2008 - I like the Cactus Club. When I used to work in the area, it was a great spot for lunch and still is. Our server on this recent visit was very friendly. She made small chat, asked how the food was, checked on re-fills, and was really friendly and pleasant. The food was good too. I ordered the salmon sandwich; a decent portion of fresh salmon (not a processed patty) served on top of a ciabatta-style bun with a caper tarter sauce-I asked for the sauce on the side and this wasn't a problem-thank-you! The filet of salmon was very moist and flavorful. I would definitely order this again. My friend had the spinach and artichoke quesadilla and was also pleased. In the future, I would love for the restaurant to have its nutritional information available on their website.

"Yam fries!"

August 2008 - Great beer (ugly), the best yam fries in the city and delicious appetizers.
The service is good and the food arrives fairly quickly. Great ambiance.

"It was ok - convenient because opens til midnight on weekday"

by Sandy (from Toronto)
February 2008 - I went here since my friend recommended the 7 ounce fillet steak medium rare. The steak was nice. I found the asparagus on the plate to be soaked with too much oil though - and the waitress actually got my order wrong since I ordered beans to replace the asparagus but didn't want to hassle her about it. My friend ordered the seafood linguine and I thought that was much too creamy for a tomatoe based pasta. I thought it was ok...it was just convenient to go to because it was past 10 pm on a weeknight and not too many options. I wasn't full after my dinner and an appetizer of salad.

"Good again"

November 2007 - We have been to the Vancouver locations several times and always had a great experience. Couldn't wait to try the Calgary location and as usual, we were impressed. The food is outstanding. The wine selection is good and the service is fantastic. It is a bit of a casual atmosphere but still very nice.
My girlfriend loved the bathrooms!
Go and give it a try!

"Fits the Formula"

by Dana (from Calgary)
October 2007 - Mexican-influenced American cuisine is on the menu at this standard, modern Calgary restaurant. The food is good: decent portions at decent prices and there are a wide range of meals to choose from. The Garden Burger is surprisingly tasty and the quesadillas are fresh and full. I prefer places with a bit more character, but the atmosphere here is still nice with dark wood, stainless steel, and big soft yellow lights. Pleasant but very uniform with the likes of Earls, Moxies and the rest. Actually, they all tend to meld into one in my memory. It's a popular restaurant, and it's not unusual to wait 10 or 20 minutes for a table. The restaurant staff are polite and very capable and to sum up, I suppose it's a dining experience you can depend on.

"Great Food and Ambience"

by James (from Calgary, Alberta)
January 2007 - Awesome Food and great service. It's my overall most chosen place to eat. The ambience and mood of the place is great. Even the style of the bathrooms is amazing. A few dishes that I would suggest would be: Calamari (as an appetizer), Smoke house chicken quesadillas (for something light), Kung pau Noodle Bowl (for something spicey but very yummy), and I better stop before I end up listing the whole menu. Their Bellinis are pretty good too if you're into that sort of drink. Check it out!
