| "NOT IMPRESSED With My Last Experience Here" |
|
|
by Lucie (from Calgary) January 2007 - Classic Jack's isn't a spot where I normally hang-out but I do come with friends once in a while for a quick pint before going elsewhere or to watch a game. It isn't my favourite place in Calgary but I certainly don't mind it and usually have a good time when I do go there. They've got a pretty impressive pub food menu and everything I've ordered there has tasted really good. The ambiance is pretty plain but it's fine for a sports bar. And they usually have a pretty good drink special going on throughout the night.
I was pretty unimpressed with a recent experience there though. I went with a group of 7 or 8 friends, mostly girls, to watch a football playoff game on a Saturday. Since there was a Flames game on that night we called ahead to ask if there would be a TV or two playing the football playoff game. We were assured that there would be, but still when we got there we made of point of saying that we were there to watch football so could we please sit by a TV showing a game? I believe it was one of the managers that seated us and he said it would be no problem to sit by a TV showing football. Halfway through the football when the Flames game started, each of the numerous TVs (there must be at least 20) in the bar switched over to hockey. No problem, we thought... we'd just ask to have the one TV that we were sitting by switched back over to the end of the football game. We asked one of the servers if it would be possible to finish watching the playoff game and she was very polite and said she'd look into it. The same person who sat us at our table came over and switched the channel back, but not without making a big production out of it and looking extremely put out at having to do so. We thought it was a bit silly, as we had made it clear to this same person earlier that we were at the pub to watch football, but we did appreciate him turning the channel back for us.
Immediately after changing the channel though a single customer (one person in the entire bar, which was pretty full) began complaining that the one TV we were watching was not playing the hockey game. The guy made a huge production about it, giving us dirty looks and complaining to the staff member who changed the channel back for us. Every other TV in the bar was still playing the hockey game but this guy just had to watch the one TV we had been watching for over an hour. Luckily the staff member did leave our TV on football to be fair. We thought it was a bit ridiculous that there should be such a fuss over a single TV, especially after confirming twice that we'd be able to watch football, but still appreciated that this staff member had stuck up for us, so we made a point of personally thanking him for allowing us to continue to watch the game. His only response was to let us know that we should be happy because "It nearly caused a riot". Seriously? A single customer complains that one TV out of 20 isn't showing the hockey game and that is considered "a riot". We were really unimpressed by his reaction to our having gone out of the way to thank him. We didn't feel that we were asking for anything out of the ordinary, especially since we were a polite table of 8 or 9 customers vs. a single person who didn't want to have to choose any of the other TVs in the bar to watch the hockey game. Once the football game was over (only a few minutes into the second period of the Flames game... so the guy was 'inconvenienced' for slightly more than 30 minutes) we immediately changed the channel back so this other customer could watch the game on every single TV, if he so wished. Nonetheless, when we left we still heard him mumbling something about being glad that the table of (word that rhymes with witches) was leaving so he could watch the game. Nice. Most guys I know would think it was pretty cool that a table full of women wanted to sit in a pub and watch some football, but not this guy! We weren't surprised that he and his buddy were on their own.
I will say that other than that bad experience, the rest of the night was fine. Our server was obviously over-worked but she was still great. Usually very prompt and got all the orders right. The food we ordered tasted good as did the drinks. And that once customer was definitely not representative of the bar's other patrons, who all seemed nice enough. A few even came over to stand by our TV and finish watching the football game as well. We were just disappointed at the one staff member's (who we're pretty sure was a manager) reaction to our trying to thank him and to having to put up with being verbally abused by a single, miserable and unhappy patron when we were a large table happy to pay and tip our waitress well.
I definitely know my group of friends and I will be spending our money at a different establishment on Superbowl Sunday. If anyone wants to respond with a recommendation for a good place for a nice group of women to watch some football, feel free to let us know!
