| "Best Seafood " |
|
|
by Dana (from Castlegar, BC) March 2008 - My wife and I were visiting Calgary on Saint Particks day and decided to try for some seafood. A search on the internet led us to Big Fish with a two for one oyster special. We ended up sharing everything, two dozen mixed oysters, Mussels in a green curry broth, A crab salad, a Ruby trout entree and dessert all accompanied with two excellent Hendericks martini's and a bottle of Summerhill Ehrenfelser wine. My wife's half Irish blood made her try the drink special - an Irish Car Bomb, and she really enjoyed it. It was an excellent evening nice ambience, attentive staff and probably the best seafood served in Calgary.

| "A really nice place!" |

by T.C. (from Calgary) November 2007 - After seeing a couple of good reviews, a friend and I decided to try Big fish and we were very pleasantly surprised. We started with an appetizer of frogs legs which had great flavour and were cooked perfectly. They feature a raw oyster bar with six different varieties from both coasts, and having never had a raw oyster I decided to try them. The oysters came on a bed of ice, smelled very fresh, and tasted great too. They came with two kinds of sauce, one was a variety of aioli and one was an herb vinaigrette of sorts. Both were somewhere between "OK" and "good," but I would try different sauces next time if they were available. I would make a point of going back for the oysters.
For a main course I had arctic char which was served with an unfamiliar green and cooked barley. The dish really worked for me -- the char was excellent as were the greens but the barley was a surprise, what I thought would be a new but likely bland experience turned out to be a very flavourful and satisfying side dish. My friend had the lobster and butternut squash risotto which was creamy and had a nice flavour. The lobster really came through and wasn't overpowered. The menu has a nice selection of appetizers and main dishes -- not a lot of options, but when each sounds better than the last that's not a problem. The wine and spirits list is pretty comprehensive and I was impressed at the selection.
Big Fish brews their own ice tea which isn't the sickly sweet stuff you get at so many restaurants, and I really enjoyed it. The restaurant is fairly small so I'd suggest a reservation (although I'd only reserved 24 hours in advance and had no problem) and unfortunately there's no parking I could see, so give yourself an extra 5 minutes as you'll probably have to park a block or two up on 10th Avenue.
All in all, I was very pleasantly surprised and would definitely go back!

by Patti (from Calgary) August 2007 - We went to this restaurant based on this site. What a lovley surprise. The quaint atmosphere, bluesy music and attentive staff made this the right choice for dinner. But....the food....OMG....I had the halibut which was mouthwatering and my husband had the swordfish.....and we started with oysters which is a must!!!
An awesome restaurant worth visiting. We will be going back!!!

by Wes (from Calgary) December 2006 - Big Fish is a cozy little place on Edmonton Trail that very simply offers the best seafood in Calgary, the Tuna is to die for. Last time I ate there I had the east coast oysters, superb, the frogs legs, also superb as well as my usual Tuna. Great value and great service as well.
