"An Arts Groupie's Shangri-La"
9.17
by Gloria (from Calgary)
October 2008 - Following a WordFest panel discussion with Paul Quarrington and Nino Ricci, I met with a friend at the Auburn for some wine and conversation. Moments after we settled into one of the roomy booths, the authors breezed through the doors and clustered around a nearby table. It took a few moments for my starstruck self to recover, but that's the way the Auburn rolls: there's always a notable personality from the creative arts hanging out at the bar or gesturing wildly over martinis at one of the tables.
Once I was able to stop gawking at the table of writers, my friend and I each ordered a glass of cabernet sauvignon. For a house wine, it was certainly decent, and the glasses were almost filled to the brim. Good news for winos like us. We opted to share a few appetizers from the menu: steamed dumplings and the chicken quesadilla. I voiced my craving for cilantro and our server happily offered to have the chef toss some into the mix. Nice touch. When the food arrived, I was slightly disappointed with the dumplings presentation. However, once I popped one in my mouth, the flavors were savory and simple and the texture was soft, and pleasantly chewy. The chili oil added some welcome heat, too.The cilantro laced quesadilla was outstanding, with generous amounts of blended cheeses and tender chunks of chicken. The accompanying sour cream and salsa were fresh and abundant.
This hub for Calgary's arts community is undergoing some menu adjustments in the coming months, and I'm excited to see what they come up with. No doubt, it will be creative and inspired.
