| "Exceptional Little Diner in the Heart of Calgary" |
|
|
by Victor (from Calgary) March 2008 - My last visit to Avenue Diner were with friends that were just coming through Calgary on their way home to Edmonton. We agreed we would meet for breakfast at Avenue Diner. What makes this place great is the size... not too small and not too big! It is long and narrow in the heart of Calgary on Stephen Avenue in one of the classic heritage sandstone buildings. They focus on breakfast and lunch... the diner closes at 3 pm to allow the rest of the establishments down on this end of Stephen Avenue to fight for the cocktail and dinner crowd. The food is great! It is not complicated but the owner has put enough thought into the menu that there are a few nice twists to some classic dishes. For example, the Steel Cut Irish Oatmeal - comes in a cast iron fry pan - the oatmeal has been baked with cranberries and maple syrup, cut into squares and presented in the cast iron pan. It was the best oatmeal we have ever had at any breakfast restaurant! The diner uses fresh products from local producers - and relies on the goodness of the food to speak for itself... it gets "four" spoons up from us!

WOW! Thank you for the great review. Avenue Diner was built on love, passion and hard work and it makes my heart soar to hear that our guests are feeling the effects of that. Thank you for noticing and thank you again for your patronage. Hopefully we'll have the opportunity to serve you again in the future!

by Alberta (from Okotoks) February 2008 - Last time I was there I requested a simple poached egg, multi-grain toast with no butter and a fruit cup, and I got just that-perfect. Thank you Avenue Diner for providing healthy options for your customers.

| "Busy but worth the wait" |

by Minnie (from Calgary) April 2007 - My man and I were downtown on Sunday around lunchtime so we thought we'd pick up some brunch. I'd heard good things about Avenue Diner so when I saw there was a line-up, I wasn't surprised. However, they let you decide whether you want to wait for a table or settle for a spot at the counter, which is just fine for us -- we were seated in about 10 minutes, and were given free coffee in the meantime. They have a great list of specials and an even better menu. He had the omelette of the day with a caesar, while I had the three-cheese grilled cheese with a mimosa. The mimosa was pretty pricey ($9) but they used quite good champagne and made it very stiff so I guess that jusitfies the price. The food was great, though our order was slightly slow to come, so the very pleasant server took some charges off our bill, which was very nice and not really necessary because we were prepared to wait. All in all, it was a great experience and I wouldn't hesitate to go back.

by wendi (from calgary) September 2006 - I'm filled with remorse at eating all but a forkful of my eggs benedict. It was just so good I couldn't stop eating it. There are three kinds of benny's at Avenue, and I had the one with basil and tomato. My friend had a breakfast burrito. And you can get your breakfast all day here. Prices are good, around the $10 range. The atmosphere is hip-diner-chic. Eat at a booth or at the counter, which has chairs with tractor seats. I've been here once before and had their grilled cheese sandwich which has three, count 'em, three kinds of cheese, including brie. There are salads on the menu if you're watching the old waistline, but don't be so boring.

by Frances (from Calgary) February 2006 - I really enjoy dining at the Avenue Diner. They have a good menu, featuring an all-day breakfast with all the classics including eggs benedict, pancakes, oatmeal, bacon, omelets, etc. The staff is pleasant and willing to make any substitutions. This place fills up very fast and gets very busy, especially on the weekends, which results in slow service. Overall, comfy atmosphere (a bit cramped when packed), good food, nice staff.
