"Beano is the bomb thanks to new management and gorgeous renovations"
9.17
by John (from Calgary Alberta)
November 2007 - All these old jacks complaining about "the new Beano" aren't even considering what a fantastic renaissance it's seeing under Janice Beaton and her business partner. What we had before was HORRIBLE espresso pulled on a broken-down, filthy machine, with "characters" employed there who knew nothing, zero, about coffee. What you have now is a genuine artisanal third-wave coffeehouse that will can fight for its place in a time, now, when local greats like Phil&Sebastian and Bumpy's (and soon Caffe Artigiano) have raised the bar for "coffee." Beano could NOT survive on charm and ambience. It had to perform as a coffeehouse. Now, thanks to a brand-new La Marzocco Slayer machine, lots of re-training from the folks at Fratello, competent new hires, a Fetco brewing system, and new open space thanks to the purchase of the former barber shop next door, we have one place on 17th Ave that you don't have to be embarrassed to take a visitor from Vancouver. Tight espresso shots made with naked portafilters, properly steamed milk (not the undrinkable seafoam of yesteryear), and--YES!--latte art all propel Beano into the third wave.

"great Calgary community coffee house"
7.67
by Rob (from Calgary Alberta)
September 2007 - Great little coffee house in the Beltline of Calgary. Many changes over past few months - mostly for the good. Great espresso and decent brewed coffee. Food is limited but wholelsome. Better ambiance with the expansion and much more conducive to hanging about. Staff could learn to smile more. Service a bit slow but this may be more a result of popularity. Floors a bit dirty. Still an unpretentious palce to have coffee and community.

"Filthy"

by Andy (from Calgary)
June 2007 - I couldn't believe that some people rated Caffe Beano so highly. The one and only time I've been in there, the woman who served me was not just unfriendly, but rude. The place looked totally run-down and filthy. It reminded me of some of those independently-run pizza by the slice shops in sketchy parts of town. I got my coffee and got the hell out of there as fast as I could. The coffee tasted okay, though.

"Arrogant owners making terrible coffee"
2
by Carla (from Kelowna, BC)
April 2007 - I had heard from several business associates that Beano was the place to go for coffee while in Calgary and decided to give it a try when I was there in April 2007. After ordering my latte, which incidentally was lukewarm, weak, and just plain yucky, I sat at one of the tables and started to notice the state of this coffee shop. The floors were filthy, the servers handled money and then baked goods without handwashing, the amount of fruit flies in the shop was frightful, and there was a funny, garbage-like smell wafting from the back hallway. As I sat thinking, I was approached by two women informing me that they were the new owners of Beano. At first they seemed nice, but they proceeded to talk endlessly about themselves and how important they were to the business and the community. I wasn't the only one to be on the recieving end of their self-serving rants that day. I was disgusted by their pretentious ego-boosting behavior and decided to leave this bad experience behind me. It is my understanding that prior to the recent sale, Beano was established for over 14 years...I think an era of great coffee and service has ended with the sale of this business.

"New changes at Beano"
8.17
by Mel (from Calgary Alberta)
April 2007 - Caffe Beano changed hands this month- for the better! New bagels, better service and attitude, cleaner. New blood and energy. Always a great community but the place deteriated over the past year.

"New does not equal better"
1
by Berk (from Calgary, Alberta)
April 2007 - I have learned that Beano is under new management as of April 1, 2007. What used to be good about this coffee house was the fact that it was like a community, willing to welcome almost anyone who walked through the doors. Now you have to be prepared to be served a generous portion of elitist attitude with your coffee. I'm surprised they don't stop you at the door if you make less than $60, 000 a year. If I wanted bucks, I would go to bucks. If you are thinking about gracing this establishment with your presence, don't.

"No customer service..."
1
by Bradie (from Calgary, Alberta)
April 2007 - I used to be a regular at Caffe Beano, but since the change over in management, I will be finding myself a new local coffee shop. The service has taken a hit, and not for the better. I used to get greeted by cheery smiles, prompt service, and even a "How is your day going?". All I get now is rude service and tepid coffee with a "Next!" tagged on the end. I don't appreciate being treated as though my custom is not worth the establishment's time. I am so disappointed I want to cry. Terrible and unjust - nuff said.

"Higher Grounds"

by Corbet (from Calgary)
August 2006 - Caffe Beano is one of Calgary's most well-loved coffee shops, as evidenced by the large crowds that congregate in front of the store on any given morning. The coffee is excellent, with as much variety as any name-brand coffee house, at a fraction of the price. They brew a mean Americano and the cream cheese brownies are off the charts. Even though it can get mighty busy during the morning rush, the staff are friendly and do their best to get you in and out and started with your day. Plus, it is the best coffee shop on 17th Avenue, so the people-watching is top-notch. A great place to start your day.

"Buzzing!"

by Wendi (from Calgary)
June 2006 - I've been going to Beano for years because I love coffee, and I especially love coffee from Beano. The prices are good, it's unpretentious and it has a great atmosphere. It's diner style with booths and a counter. And the patrons, as well as the employees are oh so interesting. You'll know what I mean if you've been there. And according to my friend Nkole, it's a good place to meet people. I often get the chai here, which is made with spices and honey (no syrup from a carton here) and their chocolate milkshake is yummay. They only take cash, though, so your debit card is no good here.
