"Excellent!"

August 2007 - We had family in town on the weekend and they aren't particularly adventurous with trying new kinds of food like my husband and I are. However, Atlas fit the bill perfectly for dinner. Their menu is full of familiar ingredients (beef, chicken, rice), but prepared with different and delicious spices and flavours.

It was a Sunday night and I was surprised how busy it was - almost every table was full. While we waited for our food to arrive, we took a look through the specialty market part of the building. They have all kinds of things there - pomegranate paste, various pickles, spices, dried goods, etc. One of the servers saw us looking and came over to show us the products and explain how they are used in persian cuisine.

Our food arrived quickly and it was very tasty. I split the sample platter with a relative. We each received a large plate of saffron rice. The platter for sharing had two koobideh (ground beef with spices) kabobs, and one chicken and one steak kabob. The steak was my favourite. It was cooked to order (medium-rare) and just melted in your mouth. The plate had two grilled tomatoes and that was it for vegetables, but the portions were very generous as the two of us couldn't finish everything.

My husband had the fesunjoon (not sure if that is the right spelling), which is a stew of chicken, pomegranate paste and ground walnuts. It is tasty, although I find it a bit rich and all the nuts make it quite oily. He loves it though.

Service was great - very friendly, knowledgeable and quick with the many tea refills. (There is no alcohol served in the restaurant. )
