April 2009 - We had not been to Charlie Chan's for years so decided to check it out again. It is located in the core of the trendy area called Kensington. The lights are SLIGHTLY subdued and at first it seemed cozy and inviting. Upon closer inspection, however, it was just a big room with a lot of tables in a row. I do not understand why more restaurants don't add some candles for ambiance. The servers appeared to be husband and wife, and seemed very happy to see us. For a Saturday night, it was not very busy, giving the impression that business is slow. I checked out the wines. Wolf Blas Yellow Lable for $36, and their house wine was L'Ambiance. ($6.50 per glass) The Wolf Blas was a pretty good deal. (Less than twice what it costs in the liquor store) The L'Ambiance, a very inexpensive wine was way overpriced. We ordered Salt and Pepper Seafood for about $16 and Chicken and Cashews in a yellow bean sauce for a bit less money. The seafood was deepfried squid, shrimp, and I think scallops. No complaints. Nothing bad or especially good to say about it. The chicken dish was quite tasty, not delicious, but it was good enough that I kept picking away at it until I was nice and full. One thing that did impress me is that both servers sang happy birthday to a customer IN TUNE! Although I really had nothing to complain about at Charlie Chan's, it wasn't good enough to make me want to return.

"Highly Un-recommended!"

October 2007 - Charly Chan's Rice House was a huge dissapointment. They have a very impressive website but it is very deceiving. The atmosphere is dull and the food was most distasteful. We ordered Thai Beef with a peanut sauce, which had a hot pepper beside its name. The beef was chewy and fatty, the peanut sauce seemed like melted peanut butter and it was not spicy at all. Our second dish was Mangolian Eggplant with pork, red peppers and oninons in a szechwan sauce. It also had a hot pepper beside it. The dish was first, unappealing, the veggies were over cooked, there were few red peppers and I had to spit out a stip of pork fat. It too was not spicy at all. After only a few bites of each, I couldnt eat anymore and did not get a doggy bag. This was our worst eating out experience ever! We both had sore tummys and came home to eat a nice green garden salad. Highly Un-recommended!

September 2007 - Charly Chan's is fantastic. Great service, tasty food and a convenient location. I have been going there for 10 years and they are consistently good.
