"Average Food"
6.50
by Zoey (from Calgary)
October 2008 - I liked the atmosphere at the Broken Plate, but I found the food average and pricey. I ordered two appetizers (dolmades and hummus) as a meal and thought they were okay. The dolmades were kind of bland and the pita bread that came with the hummus tasted like the stuff we buy from the grocery store. The Broken Plate gets top marks for decor and atmosphere, but needs to work on its food.

"Very Ordinary Food at Fine Food Prices"

by Patrick (from Calgary)
August 2008 - At $180 for dinner for three, I expect something more than tavern or diner fare, but that's pretty much what you get at the Broken Plate. For the most part, the food is not bad (though some of it is), but it is very ordinary. Greek salads were fresh but made with poor quality vegetables (e.g., hard, woody tomatoes) and cheap, mushy cheese. Seafood souvlaki was unsubstantial, slightly overcooked, too salty and accompanied mostly by starch (rice, potatoes and undercooked carrots). Desserts were very bad: rice pudding was cold, hard, congealed and tasteless; baklava was dry, hard and slightly burnt. Coffee was undrinkable--tasted like instant.

Service was polite but uneven, attentive at times, slow at others, particularly between courses. One server could not answer simple questions about the menu or the house wine and had trouble uncorking a bottle of wine (had to go for a second bottle after breaking the first cork). Three different servers served us over the course of the meal.

The environment is also more like that of a tavern than a dining room. The much too loud disco-like music forces everyone to shout. Tables are close together. Definitely not a restaurant to choose if romance, business or even conversation is part of your dinner plan but probably good for office parties and the like.

"Excellent choice for a dinner party"

April 2008 - We booked the Broken Plate for a 70th birthday party for 33 people. The food was excellent the service was amazing and Hector took care of every detail. They even assisted us in getting a belly dancer for the occasion and she made the event a huge success. I would highly recommend them!

"Greek never tasted so good!"

February 2008 - Not your ordinary blue and white greek restaurant.......finally! :)

I went on a weeknight after work one day, and really liked it. So I booked for the next weekend because the waiter said there was dancing and plate smashing. When we got there, the room was packed. The servers were dancing and had everyone clapping. The place felt completely different than a weeknight. Tons of fun! Definately a place to take your celebrations.

So far, the food has been outstanding...best lamb chops I've ever had!
The menu is mostly greek, mediterranean. There are lot of other things that aren't traditional but just as delicious and creative like spinach and feta risotto.

All-in-all the amazing food, really attentive service, and fun atmosphere will keep me coming back. (more than likely on my b-day, so I can smash a plate, OPA!)

"Okay, but not very Greek!"
4.50
by Jen (from Calgary, Alberta)
January 2008 - This place was a huge disappointment for me -- I was really in the mood for Greek cuisine, but the fare only vaguely resembled any kind of Greek food! The menu had many pasta and meat dishes that you could find at any other boring restaurant. We waited forever for our food, and once it was put in front of us we immediately thought "what IS this??" It wasn't terrible food, but it was definitely the worst "Greek" food I've ever had. Way too Americanized! If you're looking for an authentic Greek culinary experience, do not go to Broken Plate.

On the upside, the ambience was nice and the host very friendly. It was the menu that was most disappointing! Not worth the money. Still looking for good Greek food in the city :(

"good start,bad ending"

October 2007 - We went to the Kensington location for a birthday celebration. The evening started out great with loads of fun, great drink and ok meal. At the end of the evening we paid our bill in cash with a tip and proceeded to visit with another table for about 10 minutes before leaving the restaurant. While on the street waiting for a cab our waiter came out and pulled us aside from the other crowd standing there and told us there seemed to be a problem with the bill. He accused us of shorting it $20. We knew we had more than enough to pay the bill along with a tip because it was all double checked. He had plenty of time to point the so called error out to us while in the restaurant. We felt he took advantage of 4 women from out of town who he thought had had one to many sangria. We gave him the extra $20 against our better judgement but with cab waiting and crowd around us it seemed the right thing to do. We will definitely not recommend this restaurant to anyone. Unfortunate that one bad waiter can ruin it for everything.

"good food - poor table"

September 2007 - We have been to the Ranchlands location and loved the appetizers so we went to the Kensington location for my birthday. We had the flaming cheese again and it is just to die for! The calamari is very tasty, and we had the feast for two which was super. I would say that after the appetizers that the feast for two could have served four as we took most of it home. The only bummer was the table. We were six people so they seated us at the only big table which is at the front door (rainy night, cold wind) and next to the window. Makes for a not so comfy dinner!

"bad night?"

April 2007 - My husband i went here for my birthday(actually we went to the willowpark location) and were really looking forward to our meal since we had been twice before and were impressed. We started with the calamari and the mussels-awesome! broken plates calamari has always been the best in Calgary. The main meals however were not as great. my husband had the Lamb Shank which tasted as though they boiled it to death; no taste- and the "sauce" on top of it was terrible. His side of spinach rissoto was like glue- very bad. I'm hoping they just had a off night- but i don't think we will be returning.

"Poor Service"

October 2006 - We tried to make a reservation at the 10th street location and where totally blown off - apparently they are so busy that they don't have time to provide decent service.

"The FOOD and SERVICE is soo good"

by Ashley (from Calgary, AB)
April 2006 - Me and my ex-boyfriend used to go there all the time... We went a couple of times when they were busy, they sat us at the bar and served us from there until our table was ready... When it gets dark outside on the weekends the staff do a Greek dance... On birthdays and anniversaries, you get to break a plate and get a shot of ozuo... The atmosphere is fun... and you can most of the time see the manager (down at the Willowpark location) he is really friendly and talkative... ... ... If you have the time to go to The Broken Plate, I hope you do... ... ...
