"Great Experience "

by Scott (from Calgary ) May 2009 - Really enjoyed our dinner at the Bali Indonesian restaurant. Good food great service and a pleasant atmosphere.
Our server was excellent, explaining the dishes and even giving us a small cultural lesson about our food, which was greatly appreciated.
The appetizer was delicious very flavorful and came with some excellent sauces.
We got the Mudura soup, which personally didn't blow me away flavor wise. It was however very well presented, and everyone commented on how much was going on with the soup, there was beef, carrots, egg, vermicelli and cabbage in a light broth.
The entrees were delicious the chicken and beef melted in your mouth and were incredibly well flavored. Just enough spice to be interesting but not enough to overwhelm the pallet.
Overall very impressed with restaurant would definitely return.

" A perfect evening out with family (I'm not kidding)"

by Dan (from Calgary) August 2008 - A perfect evening out with family (I'm not kidding) -August 3 2008
My Father (from Vancouver island), Sister (Vancouver) and friend (from Chile) were in town and wanted to go out for Indonesian. I checked online for a restaurant in Calgary and only found the Bali Indonesian Restaurant. So.. it's Saturday at 8PM on August long weekend and we want to make a reservation for Monday (it says they're closed on Sunday). They explained that they were closed for the Monday, and so we asked about Sunday. The short version is: "we've had some requests for Sunday so we will open for it". Service: I don't know what it would be like on other nights, but since it was a quiet night the server (owner) was amazingly attentive (not too much though). When we arrived there was one other couple there, and only a handful of other guests came through the night. I will say that I have never felt so comfortable at a restaurant before. We were treated so well. Food: We ordered the rijsttafel royal (for 4, but there was 5 of us). So much food. Amazing selection of starters. Again, the owner explained in excellent detail what we were having, but also explained some of the traditions and customs for the food. The Gado-Gado was so fresh and perfect. The owner noticed that we were truly enjoying our sambal so he brought us some different ones to try out. There was also 2 soups as part of the royal. We were told that not everyone like the ox-tail soup, so we decided to get a chicken and a ox-tail soup was very flavorful, and the meat was incredibly tender. The actual rijsttafel was unbelievable. The presentation of it was perfect, and the selection of dishes was excellent. The royal also including choices for dessert and coffee. We decided to get a sampling of the tropical ice cream. We ordered jackfruit, mango, tarrot root and vanilla. The tarrot root was my favorite, but not for everyone I would guess.
Overall: Based on the amount of perfects and amazings in this you already know how I feel. Almost 3 hours of pure enjoyment. So many flavors. I really hope that the Bali Indonesian Restaurant remains. I will be back. No question.

"Great Rijsttafel"

by Steve (from Irvine, California) July 2008 - I have had Rijsttafel in Singapore and Amsterdam and love it so was surprised to find this little gem of a restaurant while travleing in Canada. The service was superb and the food great. The flavors of all the dishes were incredible, complex, just the right amount of spices. The owner was generous in spending some time with me discussing all the dishes. I wish I could find such a place close to home in the "OC."

by Rich (from Calgary, Alberta) January 2008 - Just came back from dinner tonight at the Bali Indonesian Restaurant in Calgary, and boy, do I feel dumb. I heard about the Bali over a year ago, but Googled it and found the review from November 2006, and that scared me away. But I was still curious about it, and when I was looking for a restaurant to visit tonight to celebrate my birthday with my wife, I Googled again, and the positive review after made me think it was worth a shot.
And yes, it was worth it. Why on earth did I ever look at a single negative review and decide not to visit this restaurant?!
My wife and I loved it, from the appetizers to the meals to the service to the ambiance. Our waiter was the restaurant owner. He offered helpful suggestions, and when the food was served, he explained each item and why it was presented the way it was. He said that the spices had to be turned way down for the Canadian market, but we asked him to turn them back up, and we had a good spicy meal. The food was absolutely delicious, and the portion size was very good. Mr. I even suggested I not order one item because it would be too large for me to eat alone. My meal was the satay appetizer, then the coconut beef curry, with no dessert, and I walked out of the restaurant quite full. My wife is vegetarian, and there are fewer options on the menu, but she enjoyed her salad and her meal as well.
I deeply regret avoiding the Bali for the past year because of review. I loved our meal there, and I will definitely go back. It's a wonderful restaurant, very clean and attractive, and the food is terrific.

"Great food"

by Roger (from Sparwood) March 2007 - Firstly, I would like to say that the previous review by Dr. No was way of mark. I have spent 5 years working in Indonesia and while there, met and married my Indonesian wife Diana. With this said I think that we are qualified to say that the food was most definitely authentic Indonesian cuisine. We had Gado Gado, rendang, mie goreng and nasi goreng, to drink we had es cendol. The food and drinks were all excellent and most definitely Indonesian. The servings could have been a touch bigger but we think that the experience and meal were still well worth it. I say to you, Mr. No , you are way of mark. Roger and Diana.

"Bad... Bad... Bad..."

by Dr.No (from Calgary) November 2006 - On Friday night, I usually eat 3 (three) packs of Indo Mie "Mi Goreng". But, last Friday, I wanted to have special dinner at Bali Indonesian Restaurant.
I was interested in the restaurant, because it was quite new and its location was in downtown and close to a train station. On Friday, the restaurant opened at 17:00, and I had to wait 15 minutes because I came early. I had made up my mind to order "take-out" for "Martabak" (A7 in the dinner menu) and "Bali Traditional Fried Rice" (R2 in the menu), both of which cost me $18 plus tax. Considering that the restaurant is claimed to be "a fine dining restaurant", I had been ready to spend at least $20 for the dinner.
While waiting for the food, I was asked to sit down (note: I was the only customer at the time). I could feel that the restaurant was very relaxing with soft "angklung" music and very clean. The food was done in 20 minutes and was stored in 3 (three) styrofoam clamshells in a plastic bag. Then, I went home.
When I got home, I opened the first styrofoam clamshell which contained 1 (one) shrimp cracker. The second clamshell contained 4 (four) small pieces of things that I thought were thin spring rolls (Are they "martabak"?). The third clamshell contained the fried rice, but it was horribly small ! First, I tasted the fried rice + the shrimp cracker. The taste of the fried rice was slightly sweet (note: I do not believe Indonesian fried rice to taste sweet). I could taste chicken in it, and the the sweetness of the fried rice came from the chicken. The rice was probably "Jasmine Rice", although I could not tell, since I had never eaten Jasmine rice before. In addition, there were one fried egg ("telur ceplok"), raw cabbage and carrot, and chilli sauce. I thought that the chilli sauce was too much, and I never remember that restaurants in Indonesia ever served fried rice with chilli sauce. But, surprisingly, there were no cucumber pickles !
After eating the fried rice, I ate the 4 small pieces of "martabak". The skin of the martabak was skin that was used for making spring roll, and no wonder I initially thought that it was spring roll. The "martabak" did not taste like martabak that I knew of. Also, it was horribly thin ! In addition, there were pickles served with "martabak", but the pickles were red/yellow pepper with too much liquid (vinegar). I tried to eat the pickles, but they were too sour.
After finishing the horribly small dinner from Bali Indonesian Restaurant, I still felt hungry and had to cook 2 (two) packs of Indo Mie + fish balls. Eventually, I was able to finish the Indo Mie. And, you could imagine how small the menu of the restaurant was. Imagine that I usually eat 3 packs of Indo Mie, and on Friday I was able to eat 2 packs. So, the $20 menu that I bought from the restaurant was equivalent to 1 pack of Indo Mie. To fill my stomach with the menu from the restaurant, I would have bought 3 times what I spent, that is, $54. It would be too expensive !
Therefore, I do not recommend you to eat at the Bali Indonesian Restaurant in Calgary, because the food is hardly genuine Indonesian cuisine, and is horribly small to fill your stomach. You better spend your money elsewhere !
