"Down with the present, up with something new...and better"
by Joy (from Calgary)
July 2007 - I've heard rumours that this market complex might come down in the near future and although it might likely be replaced by another high rise of urban condos, I doubt the Eau Claire Market as it is now would be missed. Given its riverfront location and proximity to the Bow River Pathway and Prince's Island Park, there is so much potential for a shopping/eating district of some kind here but the complex is such a disappointment both inside and out. Its appearance from the outside hardly needs comment and inside it just feels like an empty mall with too few choices of shops and cafes. Where a cool internet, coffee-shop, sidewalk-cafe atmosphere could be created is instead a mall-style food court.

It would be great to see something replace it that would incorporate the nearby coolness of the pathway and park with a trendy village of shopping and dining, while still celebrating the area as a historic part of Calgary. Let's hope the rumours happen.

"What's the Big Deal?"
by Dana (from Calgary)
January 2007 - To be honest, I'm not really sure why Calgary celebrates this shopping complex so much. Upon my first visit in January I was a little disappointed by all the uninspired wide open space. It seems to lack energy. Although I agree that there are a couple of interesting boutique-type stores, and the free wireless Internet hot-spot is a bonus, I couldn't think of another reason to visit this mall. Staying at a nearby hotel when I first arrived in Calgary I found myself at Eau Claire fairly often but there never seemed to be anyone around, and I always missed the opening hours of the bottle store. Perhaps the place comes alive when special events are hosted there? I am yet to find out.
