May 2008 - What an interesting cafe! A slightly dented, antique 1940's dining car sat next to the Highwood Museum housed in the old train station. The restaurant is exactly like it might have been back when the train was running; little tables attached to the walls in rows along the aisle which led to a tiny little washroom. My companion had some trouble getting up the narrow steps with her arthritis, but once we were in, it was worth it. The atmosphere was crackling as it was literally stuffed with people - I've been told it is a popular local spot and it seemed everyone knew everyone else as they were talking to each other across the aisle. We joined in on the conversations since we were right in the middle of one - it was kind of fun.
The menu was light fare, including soups, salads and sandwiches. I had a soup (butternut squash with some interesting spices) and a tuna sandwich with coffee. The food was fine, but not particularly memorable; I'd eat there again more for the ambiance I think. The servers were friendly and the prices were very reasonable. Beware if you are sensitive about smaller places - the bathroom was a squishy little number that took a bit of maneuvering to even get in and close the door, and I'm not particularly big. Overall, The Whistle Stop is worth the stop if for nothing more than the opportunity to experience a bit of history.
