June 2007 - I’ve been eating at Charles Smart for as long as I can remember. I’m originally from Edmonton so I would eat there often when I lived there and most times when I go back to visit family, I make a point of stopping there if I can. There’s a reason for that – it’s the best donair place in the world! I’m not kidding you. It’s absolutely delicious and if you ever have the opportunity you have to give it a try. I believe it’s a family-run business and it’s been around forever. They have this amazingly seasoned beef and a special sauce that makes their donairs so, so good. I usually get the cheese donair - I just can’t bring myself to try the burger because I love the donair so much. But I know of people who have tried the burger and they love it so much they won’t switch to the donair! It’s located on 82 avenue and 89 street, near the Bonnie Doon Mall. They don’t have the best service or ambience (the place hasn’t changed in at least 20 years!), but that really doesn’t matter when you get food as good as this. The prices are reasonable, but I have noticed that the donairs are smaller than they used to be. The bathrooms are really gross and always out of paper towels so I would actually recommend just getting your food to go and enjoying it at home or at a park or something. But you can guarantee next time I’m in Edmonton I’ll be getting my donair fix at Charles Smart!

June 2007 - Ever since I moved away from Edmonton over 10 years ago, I've made a point of hitting some of my favorite restaurants and take-out joints, whenever time permits, when I'm in town visiting family. While quick trips to town for holidays like Christmas don't always allow me the time to slip out for a quick bite at my favorite greasy spoon, an extended trip there this summer allowed me to do just that.
One of our favorite spots for a quick meal, my wife and I made a point of hitting Charles Smart Donair for lunch one day while we were in Edmonton. Located about 15 blocks from the center of action on Whyte Ave, Charles Smart is legendary for their donairs. As per usual, my wife and I both ordered the Cheese Donair which, at $5.50 is enough donair to satisfy your average customer. For the patrons with a more substantial hunger, the menu also offers the Super Donair ($7.00), the Jumbo ($8.00) and the Super Jumbo ($9.00). I tackled a Jumbo and its nine ounces of meat, years ago, and I honestly can’t imagine being hungry enough to order anything larger. A sign beside the cash register boasts homemade 100% beef and sauce, and that’s what truly makes the donairs at Charles Smart the best in the city. The beef is tender, juicy and spiced to perfection, and the sauce is sweet yet tangy, with a perfect consistency. Tuck it all in a fresh pita, and you’ve got a great tasting, quick meal, to eat in or take out.
Charles Smart doesn’t just have donairs on the menu. They also offer burgers, subs, chicken nuggets, shawarma, fish and chips, and a selection of domestic beers, among other items. I’ve heard that the burgers are great, but frankly, I’ve never tried one. I know plenty of places that make a good burger, but I don’t know many that make a donair as good as the ones at Charles Smart. If I’m eating there, you can be sure I’m ordering a donair. One thing you can expect from Charles Smart is consistency. They’ve had the same purple chairs and sun bleached sports memorabilia, decorating the place for years, but they’ve also consistently made a great donair. For a quick lunch, or if you don’t feel like cooking after work, grab a donair from Charles Smart as an alternative to a burger or pizza. It’s worth the trip.
