"Tastiest Falafel Balls around!"
7.17

by Tiemen (from Victoria, BC)
June 2007 - One of my bands was on the second night of a weekend tour of Alberta, with another band from BC. It was unseasonably cold and raining pretty hard. It was a Friday night, and here we were, 8 wet, cold and hungry guys, strolling Whyte Ave in search of a warm place to get a quick meal before the show. Of course, with it being Friday night, most places were packed to capacity, so we wandered 5 blocks before we came to a place without a line-up, that we could all agree on. That place was Falafel House. The restaurant was completely dead. There wasn’t a customer in the place as we walked in, and we hoped it wasn’t a testament to the quality of the food. Members of our party perused the various menu boards and signs featuring specials that were hanging above the counter and on various walls, while I went ahead and ordered a Falafel Sandwich from the menu. I figured that the place was called Falafel House, and if they were going to make anything worth talking about, I was banking on it being the Falafel. The drummer for my band agreed and ordered one too. The other guys ordered everything from hamburgers, veggie poutine and chicken and rice plates, so there was no lack of menu items to choose from. The falafels were ready first, and I took no time in digging in. The first thing I noticed about the falafel was the texture of the falafel balls themselves. Instead of being the more firm/crumbly variety that you get most often, the inside was like a thick, greenish paste. Fried to a golden brown on the outside, with a delicious blend of spices, these were some most unique and delicious falafel balls I’d tasted. Beside the balls, the falafel sandwich itself was pretty standard, but it was the balls that made it outstanding. Everyone else seemed happy enough with their meals, but we couldn’t stop talking about the falafels. The restaurant itself was pretty small, with limited seating. Maybe it was the weather, but as I mentioned before, there wasn’t a customer in the place when we arrived. They also have a garage style door that opens to the street and additional seating on the sidewalk in nicer weather. Be warned, the restrooms were not clean. If you like to have clean hands before you eat, you may want to take your food to go. Personally, I was craving a falafel from Falafel House the following day, and almost made the guys stop for one before we left town. I’ll definitely be back to see if was as good as I remember.
