by Kaye (from Camrose, Alberta, Canada) October 2007 - Cafe Select located at 8404-109 St. Edmonton is located near to the University and to the Jubilee Auditorium. It is on the west side of the street and is best approached from the north due to one way streets in the area. Not impossible to manouever from the south, but a stretch. There are a few parking spots in front.
Tables are available in the back, there is an upstairs area likely for groups, and there are booths along the window area to the street. Each area appeared clean and attractively appointed. The music was too loud and not suitable for the type of atmosphere.
This restaurant serves very flavorful meals that have an artistry in their presentation. The menu includes soups, salads, light menu items and main course meals as well as desserts. Wines and spirits are available.
The main course I chose was the Seafood Curry which included prawns, scallops, salmon[though the menu said halibut], and mussels. The promised squid was absent. The seafood was served with Madras curried rice with both a yogurt sauce and a mango chutney. Strangely no vegetables were included although the waiter did mention there would be a vegetable. I was impressed with the individual flavors in the meal.
Butter chicken was the choice of my friend. The presentation was eye-appealing and gained a favorable review. The addition of a baked hot yellow pepper made for interesting comments and added flavor.
We ordered house wine at $8.50 a glass. The single dessert we shared was a generous portion of chocolate cake base with a creamy mousse layer. Whipped cream gave the chocolate added style.
The rate including wine was about $35. per person.
The service was adequate. It was important to mention that we were going to the opera as earlier experience had taught. Reservations are advised and giving yourself extra time is a plan.
If you are taking big appetites or starving students for dinner, I think you might want to go where the servings are larger and the prices are smaller. For opera night, it was just right.
