September 2007 - A quaint neighbourhood diner, Friends is located in the heart of New Brunswick’s picturesque St. Andrews by-the-Sea at 246 Water Street. Not much to look at on the outside, the restaurant is also not much to look at on the inside. The décor appears not to have been updated since the early 1980s. There are other more modern cafes in the area but Friends just happened to be the only one to be serving both breakfast and lunch at 1130 am.
The service staff was incredibly friendly and drinks and food orders were taken very promptly. Breakfast was also delivered quickly but its preparation was not rushed. The large Belgian-style waffle was nice and fluffy and topped with whipped cream and sweet raspberries. The pancakes were light and ample in size. And the coffee wasn’t half bad.
Friends seemed to be more of a local hangout than a tourist trap. As such, there was a very friendly atmosphere. If there is the opportunity, a table by the large front windows should be chosen. Tables in the back are less well lit and the view allows for tourist watching. The prices were very reasonable as two filling breakfasts and a coffee cost less than $17.00 after tax. Friends is worth a visit.
