"Sapphire was a gem"

July 2008 - When we entered Bay Bulls, just outside of our destination point of Witless Bay where we hoped to see Puffins, we happened upon Sapphire Restaurant, an unassuming little restaurant behind the tourist information centre. Later I was told by a local that the Sapphire was the best pick of the area for seafood and dishes outside the standard pub fare. The menu was a nice selection of normal pub stuff like burgers, sandwiches, and deep fried things, as well as crab cakes, lobster and so on. The prices ranged from around $2 for dessert to about $10 for an entrée. I chose the crab cakes with a small salad ($7) since I’d never tried them before. The salad was impressive, packed with lettuce, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, celery and tomatoes. Although small, it was almost a meal itself. The crab cakes were tasty enough, and went well with the local beer. The restaurant was named after a ship that sank in 1686, making the area an historic site. The waitresses were very friendly, and the other patrons were friendlier! We learned more about our neighbour’s love and hate for the sea, and his non-Newfoundlander quirks (hates seafood and fish, prefers Alberta Beef) even though he came from a place not far from where we ate. All in all, a lot of fun, and a great place to eat before or after heading out to see the Puffins.

"Good Food"

July 2008 - Bay Bulls has the distinction of being captured more during French/English conflict than any other community in Newfoundland. What I liked about it is that you could visit a colony of sea birds (puffins, Common Murres, Razorbills, Black-legged Kittiwakes etc.) and view thousands of these birds from about 6 metres, on a boat. We checked out the food at the Sapphire. The menu offered a good selection of chicken$6-$9), steaks, pork dishes. Hamburgers and sandwiches were also available. Desserts were between two and six dollars. I tried the Seafood Lasagna with Garlic Toast. I enjoyed the cream sauce loaded with shrimp, scallops and crab very much. The portion was of average size for lasagna dishes. Beer was about $6 a mug and some local beers were available, as well as national brands. In typical Newfoundland style the people at the next table started a conversation with us. One claimed to be the worst Newfoundlander ever because he didn’t like fish, lobster, or crab, and had never seen one of their famous Icebergs. He was pretty funny. Later, talking to some other locals, we learned that the Sapphire is one of two favorite restaurants in the area. Check it out, it’s a gem and easy to find as it’s on the road called the Irish Loop.
