July 2008 - This great B & B is located in Upper Gullies, Conception Bay South, NL, a smaller community about 20 minutes outside of the capital of St. John’s.
Our host, welcomed us with a big smile and sleepy eyes at 1:30 am after we traveled all day from Calgary. We opted for a room for $60, which landed us in the suite with bath in the basement of her home. There is a choice of 3 rooms with queen-size beds, and internet is available. Our room was clean and comfortable with a complete ensuite. Night snacks and a full breakfast were included, although we never managed to take advantage of the evening fare because we went out to George St. our second night (a famous walking strip with shoulder-to-shoulder bars and live music), and didn’t get back into 2 am. We stayed 2 nights, and our second breakfast was very interesting, including fried bread dumplings with molasses called Touton, moose sausages, and a meat pudding (it looked a bit like a meat patty with bread, herbs and ground meat). In addition, we had the choice of fruit, cereals, and toast and jam, as well as coffee and tea. There was more food than could possibly be eaten, and we were stuffed senseless each morning. Jean was an affable host and more than willing to help us with our plans. It was very relaxed, we came and went as we pleased, and there were no curfews. The deck held a lovely view of Conception Bay, and the grounds were beautifully kept. Peace and quiet abound in this little place and we slept very well. What a great way to start our trip!
