| "Jay Jay's Chips, Dressing & Gravy" |
|
|
by David (from Orleans) May 2008 - Soon after they opened at 11:30 am, I visited Jay Jay’s Diner for THE Newfoundland delicacy, Fish/Chips/D/G: fish and chips with dressing and gravy. That’s right, dressing or poultry stuffing (aka savoury), like you might have with your Christmas dinner. Today’s special was a small order plus a drink for only $10 (harmonized sales tax included). Even more special for me, the drinks were Coke products – unusual here in Pepsi country.
The special also came with cole slaw and tartar sauce. I passed on the slaw and then never used my tartar sauce as the single piece of fish was already covered in plenty of tasty stuff.
If you’re after some different heart unhealthy choices, the diner has a two-page menu. They accept credit cards and debit cards. Dining inside, they have room for 19 guests.
Jay Jay’s is located in Foxtrap (Conception Bay South) on route 60 at Greeleytown Road. They are not open Sundays or Mondays. If you’re a rail fan or a trail buff, Jay Jay’s is the perfect place to park and explore the Newfoundland T’Railway (part of the Trans Canada Trail system). Before the 1980s, the Newfoundland Railway crossed highway 60 exactly where the diner is located. There are no signs to explain the trail or the railway but it will be obvious.
