April 2008 - With only a couple of hours notice late on a week night, the Mamateek Inn provided me with a warm and comfortable room. The price was more affordable than other motels in town. Years ago, the inn was located right off the Trans Canada Highway. Since the re-routing of the highway, directions to find the motel are a bit more challenging.
Unfortunately, I arrived after 9 pm and the on-site restaurant (Mr Brother’s Restaurant and Pub) was already closed. However, the more expensive Choice Inn across the road has an on-site restaurant open late (Jungle Jim’s).
The Mamateek has not aged well. Like most roads in Newfoundland, the parking lot is in need of re-paving. The outdoor signage is not lighted, making it even more challenging to locate the motel. The door to my room did not sit well in the door frame. I had to slam the door to close it, likely disturbing my neighbours. While there is a handicap parking stall at the door, there is no means for a guest in a wheel chair to open the sets of double doors to enter the motel.
Don’t smoke in this non-smoking room or you’ll be paying an extra $150 for your night stay.
