"Mulligan's was...ok"

July 2008 - Two choices for restaurants were available in Port Blandford outside of Terra Nova Park in NL, so we opted for the golf course to see if we could get something that wasn’t deep fried. We chose the pub over the dining room, in the basement of the hotel on the golf course. It was pleasant enough and because of the huge windows overlooking the course, it felt quite open and airy for a pub. People clustered around the VLT’s, which sat in the corner, and a huge flat screen TV played music videos. The choices on the menu ended up being pretty similar to other spots, with about the same price range between around $6 - $13. I chose the ¼ Barbeque Chicken with scalloped potatoes, carrots and turnips for $12.95. The vegetables were cooked very well with a subtle hint of basil. The rest of the meal wasn’t very good. The chicken was overcooked and quite dry, and the scalloped potatoes were very rich and greasy, with the consistency of lard. I was really disappointed with the meal. The service was fine. Maybe it would have all tasted better if I’d just finished a round of golf? Anyhow, I wouldn’t recommend the pub as a place to go except for a beer.

"Not That Exciting"

July 2008 - Just out of the southern border of Terra Nova National Park, is the town of Port Blandford. According to a local, there are two places to eat in the town, at the gas station, and at the Terra Nova Golf Club. We chose the golf club located at the northern end of the strip along the water. Mulligan’s Pub is in the lower section of the building but is actually at the same level as the green. Through big windows you can watch one of the greens. There is also a pool table to enjoy. I ordered the Hot Chicken Sandwich in a Kaiser bun. The bun itself was toasted and had a pleasant texture, not to hard or too soft. The chicken in it, though, was not very enjoyable, as it was somewhat spongy and had very little taste. The cook had spread a little Cajun sauce on the meat and that gave it some flavour. It would have been better if the chicken had been marinated in the Cajun seasoning. I diligently munched my way through the meal, but it was not an enjoyable experience. The chicken came with scalloped potatoes. They were quite tasty but so rich that I couldn’t help feeling I was eating a lot of fat. I spoke to another couple later that night that had eaten in the restaurant above The Mulligan, and they said that they enjoyed their meal. Perhaps it would be better to choose the restaurant for your meal instead of the pub.
