July 2008 - A short drive from Torbay is the village of Flatrock. It was there that Pope Jean Paul addressed the people in 1984. At that time the bay was filled with the boats of those who came to see and hear the Pope. What a gorgeous view! It seems that you can say that a lot in Newfoundland. A bit out of town from Flatrock, we came upon a house that had been converted into a small restaurant/tearoom. It may be that it is considered part of Pouch Cove, I’m not sure. The two servers were really nice. They seemed truly interested in who we were and what we were doing etc.. For that matter, spontaneous conversations were breaking out between all the people that were sitting in the restaurant. I guess that’s Newfoundland. The menu featured soups, sandwiches, scones and coffee and everything was made from scratch on site. The most interesting part was the variety of spreads for the breads and scones. (Partridge Berry or Lavender for example.) I ordered Oatmeal bread with some Partridge Berry. The bread was a bit crumbly but it was an interesting taste. I also tried the Clam Chowder. It had chunks of salmon, cod, shrimp and scallops in a fairly thin broth. It contrasted with the very thick clam chowder I had eaten on George Street the day before. It was very good though and I would have it again given the opportunity. I enjoyed my experience at the Rock Crest Cottage.
