"Bridie's a good choice"

July 2008 - Reminiscent of an Irish pub, Bridie’s invites all ages to eat right up to 8:30 pm as long as kids under 18 are accompanied by an adult. We sat overlooking a deserted George St., listening to the beer flags flap in the breeze and the fiddler set the sound for the night’s entertainment as we ate our lunch. The selection and prices seemed to be similar in a number of restaurants (even the menus looked the same!) ranging from $8 and up. I ordered a beer (around $6) and a salad with grilled prawns for around $10. The spring salad mixed salad was loaded with raisins, walnuts, feta cheese, green onions, tomatoes, cheese and, of course, a skewer of prawns. The salad was so big I was able to give my companion some to accompany his rather small meal in comparison. The curried honey salad dressing was a great compliment to the salad and went well with my beer. All in all, a pleasant place to have our lunch.

"Fantastic Clam Chowder and Music"

July 2008 - Bridie Molloy was a real person in the early days of St. Johns and her picture is on the wall in this pub. The first thing that attracted us about the place was the big shutter-style windows. With them open wide, it was as if we were sitting out on the deck itself but we had the bonus of shade on a hot day. The pint of Honey Brown went down very well as we studied the menu. Appetizers included cod, mussels, crab/artichoke dip, Tiger Shrimp and cod tongues. There was also an interesting array of salads to choose from. Fish dishes ranged from 18-22 dollars, stews for $12 or $13 bucks, and steaks were in the $20 range. You may also choose a mooseburger meal for $13. I ordered the Cod au Gratin. It was cod baked in a cream sauce and covered with cheddar cheese. It came with a choice of soup or salad. I ordered the Clam Chowder, and I’m glad I did. It was absolutely delicious. I savored each spoonful. I admit that I am from Alberta, and perhaps I haven’t had too many great Clam Chowders, but this one was truly a treat! On the other hand, the Cod au Gratin was only passable. It was edible, but not special in any way, except that the portion was fairly tiny. I passed on my compliments about the Clam Chowder to the server and she was happy I liked it and she told me she had made the soup herself earlier that day. As a point of interest, a Celtic band called The Navigors was performing that evening and the fiddler was doing a sound check while we ate. We enjoyed that as well. All in all, a great place to have a brew and a decent meal.
