May 2007 - Until this year, I held to the firm belief that Ches’s made the best fish and chips in the country. That was my experience. It was my birthday and I was having Ches’s fish and chips!
This particular Ches’s franchise is located in a strip-mall on Torbay Road in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Exiting the store with the Ches’s takeaway meal, a hand-written sign was noticed - on the way out - which apologized for the lack of fresh product today. While my expectations were high, 'not fresh' is an understatement. 'Disappointment' is an understatement. The fish was too grey and too greasy to eat. Even the french fries were thrown away.
If we had been dining at a table in the restaurant, we could have returned the meal and requested an alternative. This product should not have been sold for takeaway.
In town and across Newfoundland, there are now too many alternative restaurants where one can enjoy fish and chips. Ches’s has lost a customer.
