"A Table Outside"

by Gary (from Calgary, Ab)
July 2008 - While staying in the beautiful community of Torbay, Newfoundland, we decided to look for a restaurant with an outdoor deck to eat our lunch. The first place we spotted that had an outdoor area was Boston Pizza. The patio was surrounded with a plexiglass see-through fence that allowed a view of the parking lot on all sides. It still felt great to be outside though on such a beautiful sunny day. The menu had a lot of variety, as Boston Pizza usually does. (Pizzas, soups, fajitas, pastas and you name it) I chose the Mango Quesadilla(about $10.00) and it came with mango, chicken, roasted peppers and a host of other yummies. It was served with a choice of fries or Caesar Salad and I took the salad. The mango was my favorite part of the quesadilla. I had never eaten mango with chicken before and the combination is both interesting and tasty. I found myself wishing that there was more mango though. Given a choice, I would gladly have traded some of the chicken for more mango flavor. The salad was okay, but nothing to get excited about. The dressing didn’t have very much tang or punch to it. Our server was a typical Newfoundlander in that she was friendly and talkative.. I know that’s a stereotype but it is defiantly based on truth. I’d go back to this Boston Pizza and try some of their other dishes as well.

"Boston Pizza in Torbay NL"

July 2008 - The BP in Torbay is a good choice if you are looking for something familiar and easy. We sat on the patio and enjoyed the sun while we ate our meal. The service was great, and my Chicken Quesadilla was just fine. The wholewheat shell was loaded with cheese, chicken, onions, and tomatoes, and came with the standard salsa and sour cream. Although there was nothing particularly special about this BP, there was nothing to complain about either. The bathrooms were nice and clean, and, if we had been inside, the air conditioning was not too overwhelming (I’ve noticed on our trip that sometimes the air conditioning in stores and restaurants is so full on its absolutely freezing!). Other than the fact the restaurant is next to a very busy highway which made it somewhat noisy to sit outside, I would recommend this BP as a good spot with reasonable prices (I paid $9.99 for my meal, including my coffee).

"Good food, poor service"

July 2007 - After a long vacation in Newfoundland, we needed to find a lunch stop before heading back to the airport. The Boston Pizza on Kelsey Drive suited the needs of our party. The restaurant was quite empty as it was mid afternoon so we had no trouble getting a table for six. I ordered the baked tortellini and that was cooked to perfection. The others ordered the Boston’s Pizza Bread with bolognese dip and two pizzas - The Meateor and Tandoori. While our smallest guest ordered the favorite Bugs & Cheese, bug-shaped pasta with alfredo sauce and mozzarella. The Tandoori pizza was definitely the biggest hit. There was only one downfall. Considering there were practically no other diners, the service was extremely slow. The servers could only be found chatting at the front hostess area and didn’t seem too concerned about the customers. We even had to find ourselves napkins that were missing from our table and skip the forgotten appetizer. Aside from the lack of service, the food was enjoyable and the restaurant was very clean.

"Not this outlet"

May 2007 - While in St. John’s, Newfoundland, we visited the Boston Pizza restaurant on Kelsey Drive just before 1 on a Tuesday afternoon. I won’t be going back.

Boston Pizza has a reliable selection and a deep menu. The food is well prepared and you can depend on the quality and the presentation of the food. If you don’t mind the garlic breath later in the day, one of my favourites is the Popeye pizza. I was not disappointed. The pizza was great.

However, it took far too long. Neither the server nor the host seemed willing to seat us or serve the two of us.

When we were finally served our food, we had to request cutlery. For my partner’s salad, I had to fetch condiments from the bus station myself. We never were offered refills of our beverages.

The restaurant was not busy. There was plenty of staff. It was a Tuesday afternoon after the lunch rush was over. Boston Pizza is a great place to eat but there are several other Boston Pizza outlets in town.
