| "The Kittiwake Kitchen is a great find!" |

by mary (from Calgary, Ab) July 2008 - When we were staying at a nearby B & B on Pool’s Island next to Wesleyville, we happened upon a bright but tiny little restaurant set up café style with checkered style linens and curtains. The Kitchen boasted stay in or take out and stays open late at night (until 10 pm even on Sundays) to accommodate the local fishery. The prices were very reasonable, ranging from $4.50 - $9 for teapot or crispies (chicken nuggets, feathers and fins, which I imagine were fish and chicken, and so forth); fish dishes ($6.75 – 12.95) including salmon, cod, and a platter of assorted scallops, shrimp, salmon and cod (all deep fried of course); burgers around $6; cold sandwiches (around $4); and, T-Bone steak for $12.95 and hot dinners (Turkey and Roast beef). They even had salads (Chef Salad for instance), and a “Healthy Corner” for those who did not want deep fried food. Desserts ranged from $2.95 – 3.50 of standard Newfoundland fare. We ended up returning a second night because the food was tasty and so I will briefly talk about both dishes. The first was the Fisherman’s platter. I admit, I peeled off the deep fried coating and found the meats to be delicious. The second night I had the “cold plate special”, apparently something commonly available Sunday nights after the large midday meal. My cold plate was interesting! Three scoops of potatoes were offered, each with a different mixture – one was mustard, one beets and the other (I think) had carrots mixed in. As well, there was a slice of turkey with dressing underneath (this is coveted here in Nfld I’m finding – it is a mixture of dry bread crumbs, spices, and a little bit of celery). Macaroni salad, and a slice of ham (which I gave to my husband) covered in jello completed the plate. While I’m sure this is a common dish here, this was my first experience with flavored mashed potatoes and I quite liked it! Something notable – for $3.50 I got a glass of house red wine (Piat D’or) filled right to the brim of the glass! I felt like I drank 1/3 of a bottle by the time I left the place! All in all, definitely a winner and should be tried by anyone in the Wesleyville area.
