| "Armstrong B and B in Witless Bay " |
by mary (from Calgary, Ab) July 2008 - We were greeted by an older gentleman when we pulled into Armstrong’s before heading off on a boat to find Puffins and Whales. I got the sense he may have been asked to sit in while the owner was doing something as he seemed a bit confused regarding the cost of the room. We wanted to stay in the B&B in the house; there were also what they call “efficiency units” (more like motel rooms with fridges etc.) for $80. However, once we straightened out it was $70 total, including breakfast in the B&B, we found our room and unloaded our stuff. Our room had a double bed, a sink and toilet; we had to share the shower with another couple. The advertisement boasted the B&B would afford the best sleep of our holiday. Although the room was definitely quiet, it was quite warm (not their fault – we even had a fan but the temperature was atypically hot in the area for the time of year). However, the bed wasn’t very comfortable, and the pillow was awful – probably a personal choice, but the pillow was so large and puffy I felt like my head was on a 45 degree angle to the rest of my body. As a result, I had a rotten sleep which was pretty disappointing. I ended up sleeping through breakfast (set at about 8 am) with a better pillow (my husband had it!), which was also sad. However, when I got up I found our host had saved me a breakfast and even made me fresh coffee. What a nice surprise that was! She was very friendly and we had a great chat. It is important to note my husband found the bed comfortable enough, so maybe it was just a bad night for me. The room was very clean; the common space was comfortable with cable TV and internet available to use.

| "A Convenient Location" |
by Gary (from Calgary, Ab) July 2008 - This place is conveniently located to take the Whale and Bird excursions from Bay Bulls or Witless Bay. My first impression of this B and B was not too good, as the fellow at the desk didn’t seem very friendly, and charged us $80 when the room was supposed to be $70. I pointed the discrepancy out to him and he apologized, explaining that the efficiency units were $80 and he had made a mistake. After meeting his wife everything became more pleasant and we seemed more welcome. As it turned out it was good value. The bed was a bit hard for me though. It was firm, which is good, but it needed a mattress pad to soften it up a bit. I am a side sleeper and I liked the support of the pillow, but my wife found the same pillow much too high and it gave her a kink in her neck. The breakfast was very good. (Fruit Salad, eggs, toast, juice, jam etc.) The woman of the house is kind and even though my wife missed breakfast, she insisted that it would be no trouble to whip her up some food. Another good thing about this B and B is you can choose to pay ten more dollars and have a motel style room. I was also pleased when I discovered the crystal wine glasses in my room. A nice touch! Free Internet is available as well in the common area. In summary, Armstrong’s B and B is a good choice for those on a budget who have no trouble sleeping on a hard bed with fairly high pillows. The breakfast was great and the company was good.
