September 2007 - Finbar’s Irish Pub at 1595 Bedford Highway is another in a long line of good Irish pubs located in the Halifax area. It has several standout features but also some rather ordinary qualities. Located in a strip mall, it is barely distinguishable from the surrounding businesses but for its outdoor patio. The interior is dimly lit, awkwardly arranged pub as it is split lengthwise by a raised second floor. Nevertheless, the menu is very interesting. They have some of the best seafood chowder and mussels cooked one of three ways. The Guinness mussels taste extremely good. The size of the mussels left much to be desired, although, most pubs in the area do not serve the largest mussels available. On this particular occasion, bruschetta was ordered as an appetizer but was unremarkable. Finbar’s usually features local entertainment on the weekends. The service at Finbar’s is adequate. The pub is a bit far from downtown Halifax but it is a good local hangout for those in Bedford.
