"Atypical Local Pub"
5
by Brandy (from Dartmouth)
July 2007 - Without a doubt, the late-night meal experienced at Big Leagues at 4 Forest Hills Parkway in Dartmouth was one of the worst ever. Likely a great local hangout during or after the big game, it is not a comfortable place for a couple to share a drink and some pub food. The fact that it is one of the only pubs in the area with a kitchen open late during the weeknights is what attracted us to Big Leagues in late August. We were hoping for some thirst-quenching drinks and some great pub food. What we discovered was disappointment.

Although the wait staff was prompt they failed to advise us of drinks on the menu no longer in stock. An attempt was made to order several coolers but to no avail. We had to settle for one of the few flavours they had available. Upon returning to the table with the drinks we didn’t really want, the wait staff asked for immediate cash payment without a receipt. While not rude, this situation left us feeling very uncomfortable. Nachos were then ordered. As with the drinks, immediate cash payment was required and without a receipt. The nachos were extremely disappointing, as we could easily have made them at home. The tortilla chips were the cheap generic brand that can be purchased at the local grocery store. The cheese was fine but the vegetables (tomatoes, green peppers, onions) topping the nachos were in short supply. Even the accompanying salsa did not kick the dish up a notch.

To top off the unenjoyable evening, a group of loud and vulgar couples nearby provided for an undesirable atmosphere. Certainly, a pub is a place to be loud and perhaps act a bit crude but this group went well above and beyond the call of duty. The one good thing about the evening was that without a bill we were able to leave as soon as our drinks and food were finished. Big Leagues is one of the few ‘true’ local sports pubs in Dartmouth. It is what it is. In that regard, it may be worth a visit. Be warned, however, they may not have your drink of choice, the food is not great, and their service style is a bit unconventional.
