"Standard Western Style Chinese Food"
7.17
by Brandy (from Dartmouth)
August 2007 - The Garden View Restaurant located at 174 Main Street in Dartmouth offers exactly what one might expect: good North American style Chinese food. Arriving at the Garden View on a late Friday night in August, the restaurant was not full but it was well stocked with couples and small groups enjoying the evening. The inside was comfortably decorated with Chinese dragons and lanterns and other decorations that many North Americans associate with China. The square dinner tables were clean and set with knives and forks and a paper place mat explaining the Chinese animal zodiac.

The service was prompt and courteous and otherwise unremarkable. The menu contained just about every familiar dish associated with Western Chinese cuisine. The group ordered the standard “Dinner for Three” consisting of egg rolls, chicken chow mein, beef and broccoli, sweet and sour chicken balls, and fortune cookies. The rolls were accompanied with a very tangy plum sauce and everyone in the group agreed that the combination was fantastic. The chicken balls were very doughy but tasted good with their sweet and sour sauce. The beef was actually quite tender and the broccoli was steamed perfectly: a nice bright and crisp green. The group, however, was split on the taste of the chicken chow mein. At least one in the group found the dish a bit “slimey.” Despite this one setback, the meal, overall, was quite good. The dishes arrived together but in separate bowls and were easy to share. The bill was also easy to swallow at under $15.00 a person after tax but before tip.

The Garden View Restaurant is certainly not spectacular but they serve up exactly what one should expect: good Western style Chinese food. If that is what you are looking for, Garden View is a sure bet.
