October 2007 - Rocco’s restaurant in Dartmouth is probably the best Italian restaurant across the harbour from Halifax. Unfortunately, this does not mean it is very good. At best it is very okay. Its location is terrible. It is attached to a dreary hotel and next to an auto mechanics shop. It has no view from the inside and the interior is faux Italian. The walls and décor look to approximate the appearance of marble but are a poor imitation.
The menu looks and sounds very good. The mains, once at the table, are a disappointment. I ordered the Spaghetti Cooze and my dining partner ordered the Scalop Vi Carci. The pasta did not taste fresh. The grated parmesan looked and tasted like the cheap type. The taste of each dish was flat. At $17 each, they were not what they should have been. At $7 a glass, the wine was also a bit overpriced. Rocco’s tries to present an authentic Italian experience but is far from faithful to their patrons. I do regret not trying the Caesar salad appetizer. Another group across the restaurant ordered it and were rewarded with a visual display as it was prepared at their table. It looked great and I have heard other people rave about it. Regardless, there will be no return trip to Rocco’s.
