| "Don't Do the Drill" |

by Brandy (from Dartmouth) May 2008 - The Press Gang is a unique upscale restaurant located in the heart of downtown Halifax that regularly receives positive reviews. We made reservations one evening and were looking forward to what the restaurant terms “The Drill:” a special four course meal for two. The entire evening started off on the wrong foot and went downhill from there. We arrived on time only to find that our table was not ready. Despite pre-ordering their most expensive meal, we were seated at what I considered to be one of their worst tables. It was very close to some other tables and near a service door. But where to begin with the critique of the food? Each course was a meal in and of itself and each also contained a very heavy protein. It was evident that all ingredients used were high quality but the chef appeared to be making simple mistakes and haphazardly combining ingredients. The first two courses were of average taste but large in quantity. They were both seafood dishes with a filling risotto accompaniment. The main was pork tenderloin in a ratatouille sauce. The combination was unexpected and the pork was dry as it was probably overcooked. By the time dessert came we were both stuffed beyond capacity. We had been expecting small portions of high quality food but instead received massive quantities of average tasting food. The dessert can best be described as schizpophrenic. It was pieces of pear baked in a chocolate cake. It was both awful and dry. To add insult to injury the bill was higher than expected. At the time, their website had not been updated to reflect the price of “The Drill.” It has since been updated but it is not worth $150. The Press Gang has a very nice look and feel but I will never go back: Don’t Do the Drill!
