July 2007 - Sweet Spice Jamaican restaurant is located at 2725 Agricola Street in the heart of what some local residents consider a burgeoning eclectic neighbourhood populated by both ultra modern home design shops and antique stores. At first glance, Sweet Spice appears ill kept and an opportune target for a commercial take-over. The restaurant was chosen for lunch in hopes of discovering a hidden gem. The interior does not indicate its Jamaican roots in the slightest. The menu, however, is full of traditional Canadian breakfast favourites, offered all day, and various items that contain black bean or curry flavours. The Canadian breakfast ordered included French toast, sausage, hash browns, and scrambled eggs. It was surprisingly good. The French toast was well above average in taste and below average in price. The Jamaican dish ordered was the featured special of curried lamb and rice. It did not look very appetizing but it tasted quite good and the lamb fell easily off the bone. The waitress and the cook, who prepares the food across an open counter, were both very friendly and attentive. Although, it was slightly annoying to have to listen to the sounds of a small TV blaring in the back of the kitchen.
The food was good. The price was right. But this is no hidden gem. If you’re in the area and you’re hungry you might as well stop in and enjoy a nice lunch. Otherwise, don’t go out of your way to visit this average local diner.
