August 2007 - The Hamachi Grill & Sushi House at 644 Portland Street in Dartmouth made a reasonable attempt to provide quality Japanese-style food to Atlantic Canada. This relatively new restaurant is clean, modern, and well furnished. Designed much like a typical family or fine dining establishment, it does feature a large sit down island in the middle for those wishing to interact with the chefs.
The menu offers several bento-style boxes and grilled meats and fi but the majority of selections are sushi. During this particular evening visit in early August, about seven different sushi selections were made. The meal began with an overpriced but good tasting vegetable tempura. Among the sushi items ordered were the lobster roll, the chef’s spicy tuna, and the off-the-menu caterpillar roll. They all tasted very good and their presentation was fair. During a previous visit the caterpillar roll arrived in the shape of the creature, including the eyes and antennae. Unfortunately, on this occasion, the caterpillar roll simply came as pieces of the body.
The service was fine during the visit but the biggest disappointment was the lack of availability of several menu items. Some sushi items were not available and several much anticipated Japanese-inspired flavours of ice cream listed on the menu were out of stock. Somehow, these absences served as a major detractor to the entire meal. Maybe the Hamachi Grill was just having an off night. Fortunately for the restaurant, there are not many sushi houses in the Halifax Regional Municipality. If you have a craving for sushi, the Hamachi House & Sushi House is worth a try.
