"Not A Winner"

August 2007 - The Casino Nova Scotia located on the waterfront in downtown Halifax is quite a big draw but its Paradise Buffet is no winner. Casino buffets often offer a cheap and decent respite from the myriad slot machines and table games. This buffet offered neither. The interior was reasonably decorated with a painted-sky ceiling and a trendy looking bar. The service was also prompt and courteous.
But that is where the compliments cease. Although located in the heart of a noisy casino, its décor signalled peace and tranquility. The noise from slot machines pressed against the buffet’s outer walls, however, shattered any attempt at peaceful conversation. The conversation focused almost entirely on disappointment about the presentation and taste of the food. The steamed mussels were tiny and the butter provided was tasteless. The dinner rolls tasted a day old and at least one of the pasta dishes was entirely too bland. The only redeeming part of the entire dinning experience was the soft serve ice cream bar. Although the ice cream came from a machine, an array of sauces, sprinkles, and toppings were available.
The buffet was priced at $15.99 per person and came with a complimentary non-alcoholic beverage. Ice cream and a drink do not merit more than $18 after taxes! On this occasion, the buffet was frequented on a Tuesday night in August. It is possible that there is a better tasting sample of food made available on the weekend. Casino Nova Scotia itself is worth a visit; just don’t bet on the buffet.
