September 2007 - Jane’s on the Common (2394 Robie Street) came highly recommended by friends and after having dined there myself, I wholeheartedly agree with the positive reviews. Located outside the downtown core, Jane’s is isolated from other restaurants and such amenities as easy access parking. I recommend parking the car down a side street and enduring a small walk. Reservations are not accepted so arrive early or be prepared to wait for a table. They are open for lunch and dinner periods, are closed in between, and do not open Mondays. Also, large groups may be a problem as few tables can accommodate more than six people.
Despite all the caveats and pre-emptive warnings, an evening at Jane’s should not be avoided. The interior is bright and spacious. The waitresses are very professional and knowledgeable. And the food is fabulous.
A group of seven dined at Jane’s on a Sunday evening in early September. Just about every dish from the ‘Main Items’ section of the menu was selected. The post-meal discussion revealed everyone had enjoyed his or her choice. I chose the Blackened Chicken. The presentation was excellent as was the taste. The chicken was tender and there was a very subtle chipotle flavour present. Accompanying the meal, I ordered a Rhubarb press to drink. I never could have believed that Rhubarb in a liquid form could taste so good! For dessert I devoured a decadent gingerbread loaf with plenty of rich chocolate icing layered on top.
Mains range in price from $14 to $18 and just about all desserts are only $5. It is truly amazing that Jane’s can offer such well-prepared and great tasting food for such low prices. After only one visit to Jane’s, it is on the top of my list for great restaurants in Halifax.
