September 2008 - The Red Stag at 1496 Lower Water Street is everything a pub should be and more. Located next to the historic Keith’s brewery, the Red Stag is a warm and inviting pub. The pub is clean, well lit, and all around very inviting. There is a long sit-down bar and booths throughout much of the restaurant. There is even an alcove near the entrance with space enough for a band that often entertains. The beverage selection is relatively good and is one of the few pubs in Halifax to serve Strongbow cider. The food menu contains typical pub food including sandwiches, burgers, and steaks. I choose the fish and chips for only $11 and was rewarded with two gigantic beer-battered fillets. The fish (and batter) tasted great and the fries were also very good. My dining partner chose the Calamari from the appetizer menu for $8 and was surprised how well prepared they were. More specifically, they were not greasy, as they tend to be at other establishments. The final bill after tax but before tip for two food items and two alcoholic beverages was just under $30 – quite a value. The service was also very good. The Red Stag seems like a good place to take a tourist for a great meal in a nice, typical-looking downtown Halifax pub.

I am very pleased that you had such a positive experience at The Red Stag Tavern. It is great to hear feedback such as yours as it helps us realize that we are doing something right. Obviously ten's accross the board would be the only review that would fully satisfy me, lol, but it is tough to be perfect all of the time. Regarding your comments about our food, we do try to exceed customers expectations with our menu. Our calamari is not overcooked and greasy, as you would usually find in a pub, and our fish is always fresh. Please introduce yourself the next time you stop in, as it would be nice to meet you.
