"Just Not the Same Without Him"

August 2007 - Shaw’s Landing is a small seafood restaurant located at 6958 Highway 333 in the small town of West Dover. It is just a couple minutes north of Peggy’s Cove and about thirty minutes south of Halifax by car. The restaurant was renowned for its former owner’s tale of woe. Ian Shaw’s daughter, Stephanie, was tragically killed in the crash of Swiss Air 111 off the coast of Nova Scotia in September 1998. Shaw, then living in Switzerland, moved to Nova Scotia in an attempt to be closer to his daughter’s memory. He opened Shaw’s Landing and ever since people have frequented the restaurant for the great fish and chips and seafood chowder or just for the chance to be close to such an interesting story. Indeed, it was the latter that compelled us to visit Shaw’s Landing.
The restaurant is situated on a picturesque little bay inhabited by local fishing boats. The sun was setting and made for quite a peaceful Sunday evening. Fish and chips and seafood chowders were ordered around the table. Thus began an interesting tale of two servers. Two different gentlemen took our orders separately. We were asked how we liked our meals about six times, whether we wanted dessert twice, and received the billed in duplicate. While their antics were actually quite funny, it appeared as if the restaurant was quite disorganized. The pieces of fish were rather small and unremarkable in taste. The chowder was similarly bland and could have used some spice to sharpen the dish. The fries were also disappointing.

In fact, the whole experience was rather disappointing, as the restaurant had, at first, seemed larger than life when set against the backdrop of the tragedy that had formed this edifice. Much to our dismay, upon settling the bill, we discovered that Ian Shaw had sold the restaurant just a couple of months before our visit. It seems the new owners may not have kept up the tradition of good food from the heart. Without the historical backdrop and the current state of the lacklustre food, Shaw’s Landing is not worth a stop.
