| "Unreasonably Priced, Everything Included" |

by Andrew (from Calgary) June 2006 - My girlfriend and I spent two nights at the UPEI residence in Charlottetown at the beginning of our week-long cycling trip across PEI. We stayed in the older residence building, Bernardine Hall. Although the room was clean and breakfast was included, the minimal level of comfort and service (which could generously be described as "institutional") was not very well reflected by the price. While we were not averse to an 8' by 18' cinder-block basement room, single beds made of a futon matress on a plywood box, a shared bathroom with a flickering flourescent light and a showerhead that fell off while in use (this in spite of a piece of duct tape holding it together), nor even a cafeteria-style breakfast complete with rubbery eggs and terrible coffee, I would expect to pay less than $75 a night for such conditions, especially for a weeknight during the shoulder season. Due to our luggage being misplaced by the airline, we had to spend an extra night in Charlottetown; when I went to the front desk to extend our stay, the staff were indifferent and indicated that they were not supposed to sell any more rooms, but that it was probably OK for us to add a night. Based on my experience with the UPEI residence, I would recommend that budget-conscious travellers find a bed & breakfast in Charlottetown, as they will likely find better comfort, food and service for the same price or less. If you do need to stay on campus, I would recommend shelling out the extra $10-$15 to upgrade to the newer residence, as the sacrifice of quality and comfort in the old residence is not worth the savings.
