May 2007 - Yasodhara Ashram is a yoga retreat and study centre located on the Eastern shores of Kootenay Lake. Its restaurant provides mostly vegetarian, local, and organic meals - most of which include produce grown on property - especially during the summer months. I enjoyed a corn and fennel soup, a variety of summer spreads (veggie pate, date, and curried cheese), as well as homemade bread and meditteranean salad. Meals are eaten in silence (though there is a conference room which they sometimes make available for guests who prefer talking meals) to promote an atmosphere of inner reflection and appreciation for the meal provided. The meals are provided by Yasodhara's head cook, Gary Sly, and the Ashram's very own Karma Yoga staff - a group of volunteers staying at Yasodhara to learn the art of yoga through work. Dining at Yasodhara can be either a peaceful place to eat or an adventure in exploring the world of a yogic lifestyle. The community offers morning hatha yoga classes, opportunities to partake in the Karma Yoga schedule, daily group reflection, and evening community chanting gatherings called "satsang." The community also offers private classes from trained teachers in any of their spiritual practices you may be interested in - I took the opportunity to explore them all - especially enjoying "dream yoga."The dining room overlooks the spectacular Kootenay mountain range and Kootenay Lake, providing complimentary teas dried from the Ashram's herb garden (I enjoyed a cup of elderberry tea).
